making it a soulslike would be an improvement.
i love the game but it's incredibly repetitive and the combat has no depth.
if they kept everything the same but made it so dodging and parrying are necessary then that would be good

I actually prefer the art direction of the second game, but I think both games' tones are incredibly good in their own right, the feeling of desolation at the start of the first Dark Cloud is amazing and I like how you are the one what actually makes everything better by building the towns, but Dark Chronicle feels incredibly comfy from the start and it gives you a strange sense of melancholic hope, damn it, I wish Level-5 would start making big games again

Thinking about it, one thing I really enjoyed about 2 is that it encouraged you to try out everything. Even the camera stuff, which is usually an afterthought in most games, would reward you with all sorts of equipment and items. There were shitty aspects to it of course, like getting fucked on something if you didn't take a picture of some boss performing a specific attack, but in general it was nice.

JRPGs of the PSX/PS2 era were filled to the brim with random minigames. Spheda had some issues(you could occasionally get fucked by RNG and certain dungeons were cancerous due to terrain) but it was solid and is still my favorite iteration of golf in a video game.

The water system was just stupid and didn't add anything to the game. The WHP system was fine in concept but the issue wasn't repair powder, it was the fact that some enemies would straight up break your weapon from nearly full WHP due to a single multi-hit attack if you didn't have Durable on it. This would have been somewhat acceptable if the weapon just became unusable until repaired but no. The weapon is gone forever.

>guard
No anon you misunderstand. The problem isn't guarding. You can chunk a massive portion of WHP from performing a single attack because that's just how some enemies are. If they block you lose extra and blocking is entirely random and you can't get around it. If they're durable enemies in general like the dragons or rock fucks toward the end of the game then you naturally lose a huge chunk per attack because that's just how the game is coded.
>hurr durr den u get durbble!
It's objectively bad game design when it becomes a requirement to avoid losing 80%+ of your WHP from performing a single attack.

The fact that the WHP system is so horribly, inexcusably flawed in the first game is a huge part of why the optimal thing to do in the later dungeons is just get Supernova and never switch off of Osmond since ranged weapons don't suffer the massive penalty of striking certain enemies.

This is where ITEMS come into play. ITEMS. That you fucking THROW. At ENEMIES. That exploits their elemental weaknesses and obliterates them without breaking your god damned weapon because you're monging the fuck out.
>but-
No! Get some fucking bombs, get some fucking crystals, diversify your fucking inventory, or suck shit because you adamantly refuse to interact with the intended fucking mechanics and solutions the game fucking gives you and beats you over the god damned head with.

Durable weapons aren't the fucking solution, they're a god damned bandaid for if you fuck up and have to engage the enemy because it's the last one left and definitely has the fucking key. You're not the retard who tries to kill every single enemy in the dungeon before moving on, not giving a care what the enemy is, are you? You're not even remotely considering the enemies at all, are you?

This is a fucking dungeon crawler, not a god damned JRPG.

Invalid argument. When you've got 10 dragons on a single dungeon floor and the item you throw deals a small portion of their health in damage it is not a realistic solution to the problem. You know what the real solution is? Dedicating all your resources to Osmond and never bothering with any weapon other than Supernova. Far more efficient and far more practical than trying to show how "clever" you are by filling your inventory with bombs and running out before you even clear half the floor.

It's a valid option for the occasional troublesome enemy but by the time you reach the end-game dungeons durable enemies who destroy your melee weapons are fucking everywhere. They're far to common and far too plentiful to make item preparation a practical solution.

Most monsters aren't fucking metal/stone. A good 2 hours of farming the backrooms means you can have a steady supply of items to make progression faster without wearing down your weapons, effectively eliminating the difficulty that Thirst and WHP intends to limit you from one-running an entire dungeon.

But sure, try to make it all absolutes as if I don't know how the game works when you're claiming the game has bad design because there exists enemies that force you to think about doing something other than spamming Attack on fucking Toan or Ungaga.

>>713523472
>ten dragons on a single floor
You mean a grand total of three possible rooms in the post game dungeon? Because that's not the case with Divine Beast Cave unless you're delving in too deep in the later level backrooms (and you can just fucking leave and don't even have to engage with them), and the only other place they can appear in any number greater than 2 or 3 is the final fucking dungeon. Which by then, yes, you absolutely should have the proper tools to deal with them, and the right items CAN fuck them over. Items aren't just damage gems or bombs.
>just dump it all on Osmond
Genuine retard. You're like the fags who say "just use the Chicago Typewriter every other weapon is worthless and a waste of precious resources" regarding RE4. By the time you've built up your precious end game showstopper I already beat the fucking game 4-5 hours earlier than you built the fucking Supernova to begin with.
>by the time you reach the end-game dungeons durable enemies who destroy your melee weapons are fucking everywhere. They're far too common and plentiful to make item preparation a practical solution
One room in the entire fucking dungeon is what you describe. One fucking room. You can leave, reprepare for it, finish it, leave to restock, and then return from there without a single penalty whatsoever. On top of this, why in the hell are you not switching to characters like Osmond, Ruby, or Xiao?

I can't believe retards are genuinely trying to use this as a defense as if it counters the bad design of RNG input-reading blocks on some enemies draining massive portions of WHP in a game where it can take hours to build a weapon. Do you retards not understand how you're trying to sidestep the point? It's not an issue of being gradually worn down. The system is inherently flawed in one of the worst possible ways.

i was thinking more along the lines of character progression rather than levels, having 6 characters to level when most are useless is shit design

>and didn't add anything to the game.
yes, it demonstrably did retard
it obviously gave you another stat you had to watch and manage, and allowed them to implement floors with status effects like thirsty, add water pools to some floors, or weapons with effects like thirst or quench, giving you a negative on some weapons you might want, and giving you a reason to level up a quench weapon to break it and transfer it to your main one
it demonstrably adds plenty of things that actualy rpgs need to keep them interesting and give you a lot of small goals to aim towards that feel good

It IS flawed to hell, but you people are refusing to accept this is a fucking dungeon crawler and a lot of the "flaws" being spoken about here are literal fucking staples of the god damned genre itself.
>>713524476
This fag has never once played a dungeon crawler and it shows. This isn't a JRPG. Fuck off.
>>713524618
You are so fucking retarded it's unreal.

Dark Cloud is literally babby's first Dungeon Crawler. Literally. You fags would get blown the fuck out with shit like Etrian Odyssey, Strange Journey, and let alone any fucking Wizardry game.

You're like the retards who bought the game because they thought the fucking cloth on Toan's hat were elf ears and this was a Zelda ripoff, then got fucking butt blasted it wasn't a fucking Zelda clone. You play this expecting some JRPG like all the others, and it turns out it's not.

You see enemies that actively punish you for attacking willy nilly and the game literally stops you cold to tell you about them and warn you about them, referring to using items to handle their defenses. Instead of properly planning your weapons AND inventory, you just want to go in and kill everything with no resistance whatsoever.

If you played the game like what it is, a dungeon crawler, you'd realize the game is actually pathetically fucking easy. The enemy variations are dogshit. Thirst and WHP stop being a huge issue only 10 floors into the first fucking dungeon and are the single most mild inconvenience at worst possible. Weapon inventory is way too small. Weapon progression is way too random and requires far too much investment past Stage 3s. Nothing rewards Guarding and Guarding gets you killed instead of potentially saving your ass. Guarding also costs WHP. Xiao gets invalidated by Ruby who gets invalidated by Osmond meanwhile Toan is ultimately better than Goro and Ungaga because Toan has the single highest amount of weapon variations. The amount of content is middling. There's your fucking flaws.

>It's objectively bad game design when it becomes a requirement to avoid losing 80%+ of your WHP from performing a single attack.
you are making shit up to whine about, zero enemies in the game cause you to lose 80% whp from a single swing lmfao. hell, no enemy in the game even takes 20% whp per swing even under the worst scenarios. blatant lies

I’m not gonna lie, I’m not sure where I’d want a new game to go towards in terms of mechanics. 2 is definitely on the basic end in terms of combat, but it does at least have some options like the dodges and being able to pick up and throw enemies. I do think the combat could still be improved but don’t want it to just be another souls style game.

1. this is your own fault for "forgetting" about a core mechanic with a meter on the screen at all times that you should be looking at every like 10 seconds
2. this is also your own fault for not strengthening your weapon correctly. do you know what solves eating whp from 20 hits on rock and metal enemies? actually giving your weapon substantial levels in metal eater and rock eater or whatever they're called. the weapons have an entire page of elements and then an entire page of enemy specific power for a reason, you are supposed to make use of them both
3. if you're a brainlet and somehow can't look at a meter, you have no excuse for not having an auto repair powder set to your quick slots for this exact scenario
anon please

>I wish it would be that easy, his argument is to farm 2 hours to have enough items to progress the game
You don't need to do that either, you just go back to town and buy repair powders every few floors. And this is only necessary in the first dungeon, after that you have plenty of money and resources - i.e multiple characters all with multiple weapons - that you can easily clear a dungeon in one go if you wanted to even though that is not the point or design of the game. You are supposed to go back every few floors, every 10 maybe, and build the fucking town incrementally, pick up all the chests you get from doing so, then return to the dungeon.

The dungeons are longer but you can get through them faster because gameplay is just faster in general and your relative movement speed is increased. By the time you get to the dungeons with massive floors you should have a speedy Ridepod. You also don't get repeatedly fucked over by seals for characters you don't have built.
>>713526810
>yes, it demonstrably did retard
Nope. You're objectively wrong. If it was actually an engaging mechanic you'd have a point but it isn't. What it amounts to is "carry some water on you at all times, use shit characters for running around and every time you come to a source of water suffer through slow character swapping to get everyone back to full."
>>713526853
>This isn't a JRPG. Fuck off.
Nope. You're objectively wrong. It's an action adventure RPG first with dungeon crawler elements second.
>>713526916
Nope. You're objectively wrong. Certain attacks drain more WHP. Certain enemies drain substantially more WHP. Certain conditions cause more WHP loss. When you're in the end-game dungeons these variables can align in unpredictable ways to cause a huge portion of WHP loss faster than you can react to it. It makes it so that the safest option is to just use the broken character who deals more damage than Toan without being subjected to the numerous drawbacks of melee combat in DC1.

It's not in a random enemy, it's in a specific enemy type based on the dungeon and floor. You never need to kill every enemy if you understand the game, at most you need to kill every enemy of one particular monster type if you get unlucky and it's in the last one. It is usually in like 1 of 6 enemies on the floor

No I am not, I am correct and you are wrong buddy. I never claimed some enemies didn't drain more whp, I said you are FUCKING LYING like a retarded little bitch by making idiotic claims like one swing can take 80% whp, which is literally impossible and not in the game -anywhere- lmfao. To break your weapon, even under the worst conditions, you have to mash AT LEAST an entire attack chain combo mindlessly without paying attention whatsoever. "muh no time to react" lmao
>well i'll just use the ranged characters
Do that then and stop whining? That is until you realize that there is no way for ranged characters to bypass blocking enemies which is why people use toan for most of them and bait them into lowering their guard whilst holding a charged special attack down and releasing it at the right time.

Nah, "dungeon crawler" implies multiple things which do not apply to Dark Cloud. It has dungeon crawler elements but they're mostly tacked on and many of them don't add much. See: the shallow thirst system and how it was removed entirely for the second because it was shallow and added nothing other than a slow waiting period as you cycled through every character each time you came to a spring.
