TWW is already a marked improvement. The writing will always be a trainwreck, but there's a good content cadence, the raids are good, casual crowd has access to many cosmetics, housing is incoming.

When they started fucking up, FF came in with QoL improvements, housing, better and consistent writing. So Blizzard pumped resources back into WoW and is catching up now, overtaking FF again.

The problem on the FF side is that they won't get that resurgence because Square Enix seems to have no interest in reinvesting resources into the game for a chance at another WoWfugee flood. They'll just slowly let it deteriorate and go into maintenance mode while draining the remaining whales.

It's not a stylish combo type game at all. I don't really know what I'd compare it to other than Nioh(another series from the same devs). I guess if I had to focus on the main parts of it, combat wise, I'd say the resource management (break gauge, MP, max MP) and sort of tug-of-war style combat "pace" where you have to force your own openings and put the enemy on the back foot. These two parts tie into each other really well and give the combat a pretty distinct feel.

Funny enough, it's getting a bit of a resurgence at the moment as XIV players start getting disillusioned with the current state of their game. It's a pretty good time to hop on. I think Asura and Bahamut are the most popular servers? Definitely asura at least.
There are trusts that can make the game feel pretty solo-heavy at times, but there's a moderate amount of players that look to group without them (or form groups with a mix of trusts and other players) since the solo-ness of XIV is what put them off in the first place.

It's even worse. Patches are so blatantly delayed with 4-5 week delays between every minor part of the patch just to milk subscription fees. Used to be that we'd get patches in just two parts, the .x0 and the .x5, with the .x5 stuff being delayed because it was genuinely a pretty large chunk of content that needed extra QA. Now we have 3-4 parts to each patch, and it's obviously all unfinished and delayed for no reason with the later released stuff having terrible QA.

I don't know if this is the issue you've had with it, but when I started Nioh, I would basically never block because of the souls mentality of trying to dodge everything. Blocking in Nioh is extremely important, and holding block when an enemy starts to combo you is your way out.
That and the potentially obvious that you've probably heard if you've seen any discussion or new player tips about the game before: Ki management is absolutely essential, Ki pulse and Flux are your best friends, and every stance is important.

I feel like XIV patches just don't compare contentwise to WoW patches.
A WoW patch has a new zone + related content, a new dungeon, new delve, and a new 8 boss raid, + revisited or new grind content down the line.
A FFXIV major patch has a 3-4 hour MSQ in existing zones, a linear one difficulty dungeon, a one boss trial, and alternating 4 boss 8-man raids or 4-boss 24 man alliance raids (which are casual content only and don't offer higher difficulties), and later half/quarterpatches with beast tribe dailies, a manderville quest, or in the later patches something like Crescent or a variant/criterion.

When you add it all up over the same timeframe, FFXIV is simply not competitive.

There has been zero innovation since Legion. Same art style, same systems, same class design. DF and TWW are the worst offenders, they feel like SL with a different theme.
