Do people hate this game because it's a WORSE Breath of the Wild, or because it's barely improved from Breath of the WIld. I barely played BotW so there's a chance this will be the "definitive" one of the two?

It's not total dogshit. It's just disappointing and confirmed that BotW was actually a fluke.

Did they update the Switch (1) versions of BotW/TotK to have the Voice Memories, or is it quite literally
>$70 + $10 + $450 + 8 years + tip
Just to have little lore tidbits with atrocious voice acting that should've been written into the world/story naturally to begin with?

Isn't TotK just BotW with gmod added? What else changed?

I feel like the only person left who holds Zelda to a high standard. I remember the genuine adoration that the fanbase had for ALttP and OoT. I also remember the disappointment when WW released because it was rushed, looked terrible, and generally fell short of expectations after OoT. Even then we, the audience, expected more.
So how does anyone claiming to be a Zelda fan justify BotW or TotK? There was a time we had standards.

For me, it's Action-Adventure. You can get even more specific with Medieval-Fantasy Action-Adventure.
Zelda is not a genre, and it's been god awful in the genres it inhabits for the last 20 something years, both thematically and mechanically. I loved the Oracle games, but it's clear that either Aonuma wasn't suited for the crossover to 3D, or that his team at Capcom were more talented than Nintendo's inhouse developers. More than likely both.

It's not dogshit, but it's ultimately a pretty boring and derivative experience. I wasn't blown away by BotW when it was new but TotK made me like it more just because the latter is so much sloppier. Fun game, but the missed potential is unbelievable. Imagine bringing Ganondorf back and having him do fucking nothing for the entire game.

The conceit of BOTW was that it gave you a big objective from the start and let you figure out a few different ways to work toward it in an open world (albeit at Nintendo difficulty on Wii Pro hardware). It was an answer to criticisms that Zelda had strayed too far from TLOZ.
TOTK took the same world barely modified and put an completely different Ubisoft game in it, plus gmod. Honestly it would have been received fine if it came out as an encore the next year, but they hyped the thing up like it was a real game for six years for $70+tip.
