Is it worth getting into this if i've never played a grand strat before? Some of the negative reviews mention expensive DLC, is this playable with just the base game?

It's a great game.
There are so many things to look after that I think it's best if you first follow some youtube gameplay to learn quickly.

CK2 is a lot more fun, IMO.
