Most games before 1996 didn't have a tutorial, period. I guess SNES StarFox is the biggest example otherwise.

People were smarter and more curious back then, they would naturally pick up the new three-pronged controller and want to try out all the controls so a courtyard with varying terrain height was all you needed. Kids today have no curiosity.
