Do controllers need more buttons? Even outside of FPS where you don't want to use face buttons games like nightreign put sprint and roll on the same button in addition to using combinations like Y+L/R to perform actions. If more buttons were standard across controllers games could add more actions without needing button combos to perform them

I like it for emulators where I can do things like bind the save state hotkeys to the extra buttons

Two back buttons, two back paddles, C Z on the face, and a 3rd left/right shoulder button. All easy to reach while still being out of the way and optional.

4 pack paddles at the very least needs to become the standard for all controllers
So many games made from the ground up to be played with a controller still run into the issue of running out of buttons or being forced to use claw grip because of bad control layouts

Replaced by bumpers since the OG Xbox controllers only had triggers. Third party controllers made black and white into bumpers real quick after release too.

Its good for leaning in FPSs, its also useful for macros, or just something to click while I wait to load in. I dont see the problem with back buttons, its just a nice feature that's there if you need it.

>Do controllers need more buttons?
Yes. How many fucking shift and modifier buttons do games have to use for you to realize the obvious that they need more dedicated buttons in less retarded places.
Thumbsticks are such a terrible thing for controllers when the majority of the buttons are also face buttons, meaning you'd need to periodically remove direct control of your movement/camera to press a dpad direction or ABXY.
Controllers need an entire revamp in the way they are shaped, and that includes adding more buttons since devs can't help but put a hundred little fucking inputs into games nowadays.

Yes they need more buttons. Modern games almost always want you to have your thumbs on both sticks simultaneously and so you only have access to 4 buttons easily. A perfect example is Elden Ring where you cannot fucking sprint while moving around and moving the camera.

I never got used to paddles / buttons on the back of a controller personally, though I haven't used a controller with one all that much. For squeezing more inputs out of a controller I really like the touchpad on DS4/DualSense. Left click, right click, swipes up/down/left/right is 6 right there, haven't really needed more.

Back buttons would be standard now and would allow devs to be more creative with control schemes, but some subhuman piece of shit patent troll is holding the entire game industry back. Patent trolls should be drawn and quartered in public, and I won't buy anymore Corsair products since they own the company that put the patent on back buttons on controllers.

A basic four shoulder button and four face button controller effectively has 32 face buttons when counting the shoulder button combos (hold L1 + L2 then press a face button for example).

You double that if you incorporate the d pad.

Leaving the sticks for movement and the option/start button area for pausing. Basically nothing fully utilizes the controller as is because it would be a god damn nightmare to do so and to play.

Absolutely they should. There's not reason it shouldn't be the norm even if for no more than to be able to assign them to actions other buttons are capable. It's nice to play an fps on console for example, and not have to play with my pointer finger over the face buttons. We've stagnated, perhaps intentionally.

I never used a controller with back buttons before I got my steam deck. Honestly I can see the appeal. I rebind the buttons mostly from LB RB and R3 L3 to prolong their live span. In one game I binded them to quick save and quick load which you wouldn't be able to in the console version of the game or just by playing on controller on PC.

more games need chorded inputs where holding a button acts as a modifier to let a bunch of other buttons or a specific one do something different than its unmodified input

I used to be all about more face buttons but these days I use 2 at most, for games like elden ring or as modeshift buttons. Most controllers have badly positioned back buttons. With gyro I don't need them 99% of the time and using them would compromise grip while face buttons are more comfortable. Also for gyro there's basically no options for true back buttons since the only controller with individual back buttons, good gyro and touchpad is the ds edge which is comically overpriced. So I just use them sporadically or in games without precise camera control needed.

I want them to become standardized and games to use them as modifier buttons. So basically holding the left or right back button makes all the face buttons do something else. That would be absolutely monumental for improving control schemes and complexity in games while also giving you free 360 degree movement.

It won't because SCUF (nobody knows what jewish entity this is but Corsair owns them) holds the 140+ patents in the majority of the gaming world regions for all sorts of game controller input options beyond the current standard. They successfully sued Valve into discontinuing the Steam controller because of this, and the Elite controllers for Xbox and Playstation actually have to license the "technology" from SCUF. Steam Deck and Switch 2 Pro skirt around the patents by having the rear buttons be on the handles instead of the back, because that's how patents work.

>A basic four shoulder button and four face button controller effectively has 32 face buttons when counting the shoulder button combos (hold L1 + L2 then press a face button for example).
This calculation is way off. There are five possible values for the face buttons. These are A, B, C, D, let's say, and the non-press, and permutations of this.

8 of them start with A. {A, AB, AC,..., ABC,..., ABCD}
4 of them start with B (removing non-unique ones) {B, BC, BD, BCD}
2 of them start with C {C, CD}
1 of them starts with D
1 of them is the empty set.

This is 16 for the face buttons alone.

Now for shoulder buttons we have the same number, 16 permutations.

So the result is 16*16=256
(a magic video game number)
