I hate to say it, but now Nintendo is just applying popular genre production techniques on classic Mario themes and that's all this OST mostly is. It's the "Lo-Fi Chill & Read" sound, or the new "pop" sound. One track is just the Mario Theme as a Bossa Nova produced with "Professional Bossa Nova CD Music" expertise.

It's lost that Nintendo iconicness by hiring in outside talent to score it "Professionally". Mario Kart 8 OST was 100% home-grown talent. No because it's not even forced soul. It's just taking something that had heart and turning it into slop, by overproducing it, and thinking you should hire "Experts" to do it rather than in-house talent.

It even says in the Behind the Scenes interviews that they invited Japanese Music Industry talent in to arrange a lot of the music. It's just turning into an Anime OST at that point.

And it doesn't matter if it "sounds great", what matters is the fucking principle of the thing.
