Yep. This is what people who weren't there don't understand, it's not that Gamergate was or wasn't ethics in journalism, it was that Gamergate spawned two camps, one headed by people like TotalBiscuit who WERE actively and actually all about the ethical standards of the industry, and then there were the people that were on the Breitbart / Bannon / Yiannopolous train that were so fucking annoying it got the topic banned even on /v/, that was just about shitting on women and minorities and making things about right/left politics. There was a very clear split in focus between the two groups, with one wanting to genuinely talk about industry practices and standards and lead to improvements in the industry, and the other group that was all about the culture war and SJWs and just wanted to shitpost and bully people they don't like or that were politically opposed to them. The latter group eventually just became the broader MAGA movement, of course, that didn't happen out of nowhere and Bannon's involvement in Gamergate was no accident at all.

Gamergate was originally about the claim that some journo was sleeping with Zoe Quinn and then gave her game a favourable review. If anybody tells you that it started with Anita Sarkeesian or anything else, they're wrong. The kickoff event was the guy who supposedly was Quinn's ex writing a long post about her sexual escapades within the gaming industry and especially with journos. Because of course Quinn had strong SJW ties to other SJW writers on major gaming outlets, the official mainstream gaming media line was that Gamergate is a harassment campaign by sexist and racist gamerboys that want to drive women out of gaming. There was definitely a part to that and if anybody tells you there wasn't, they are wrong. I was involved in GG from the start.
At the time I was an amatuer journalist covering the music industry. If you're wondering who I am, let's just say I did an interview with who I consider to be the most talented living guitarist alive in an 80s hair metal cosplay band, and the interview bombed so hard I lost my job and the bosses scrubbed it from the internet because I failed to match Satchels charisma and sense of humor so badly that I actively had people abandoning the website and YouTube channel.
Part of the reason I got involved was I saw the same things in GamerGate that I saw in the music journalist scene. Pumping less talented musicians due to a political bias, journalists getting fucked in exchange for concert tickets then they just so happen to print a favourable album review, an aura of "We want free shit so don't give a bad review" permeating the entire industry.

GG gave me an outlet to vent all the frustration I had in my own industry, but I could be anonymous. All I had to do was swap some names around.
