Why did DK abandon his son? Is he a bad father?

At first it was a nice 'connect the dots' trivia to figure out the DK lineage. But now that Bananza is coming out the lack of DK Jr. is odd.

Jumpman and Mario are not the same, anon. It got retconned. When Cranky Kong was young it was Jumpman, when DK JR. was a young adult it was Dr. Mario, and now it's DK (III) and Mario (III). Pauline is also Mario's second cousin because she came from Luigi (I), and it's not considered incest to date your second cousin.

Gorillas have a shorter lifespan than humans, so it's never really been that odd that a DK would appear to have "aged" faster than Mario and his human crew. It's a hand-waved explanation, but that's really about as far as you can take things when you're talking about a fictional video game series with cartoon characters. You can call it a joke, but that's basically been the "canon" for the past 30 years. And Cranky being the original DK wasn't the joke - the joke is that BECAUSE he was the original DK (and was now old and past his prime) he became the typical "cranky" old timer who would never stop talking shit about the new generation and how great he was "back in the day."

The joke was demonstrated immediately at the start of the game- the graphics of the DK Arcade are associated with old man playing gramophone, then the hot new 3d jungle jumps in and old man gets kicked out as cool new DK with sunglasses dances and listens to much more elaborate cool music in a ghetto blaster. The whole joke was "Our new game is fresher and better, and only old people care about old games that much and they're just grouching about".

It's also never really been the "canon" outside of DKC. In the interactions the Mario series has had with these subseries, DK is always treated as being the same one from the original game, exactly because otherwise you have to acknowledge that a character that was contemporaneous to Mario suddenly is a geriatric with a nephew who is NOW contemporaneous to Mario

It was always a silly joke Rare made, because they liked breaking the 4th wall, think Banjo and Kazooie being fat because they haven't had a game in years in Nuts and Bolts. Nintendo always ignored it when needed, as they are doing now

To be fair, DK hasn't really had very many games OUTSIDE of the DKC series. The "Country" series is basically mainline DK and then he occasionally got a few spinoffs like the bongo games. So again, the fact that this was/is canon for around 30 years in the mainline DK series remains about as telling as you get with Nintendo, who notoriously isn't big on canon even in titles that would benefit from it like Zelda, much less in their Mario/DK games.

This. Aonuma had to make up an entirely different timeline branch because he fucked up and wrote a scenario on Hyrule needing to be flooded because the hero's spirit was sent back to the past and couldn't reincarnate, and the other branch said that the sages failed to seal Ganondorf because he had the triforce of power and wasn't weakened. If the sages can't deal Ganondorf in that scenario, then the fallen timeline doesn't work since it implies they had to have succeeded without Link. Nintendo executives can't into coherency across their games.

DK Bananza is closing a time loop surrounding the arcade games, the Super Mario games, and the Donkey Kong Country games. Bananza takes place AFTER the DKC games, but BEFORE the arcade/Mario games. It's cyclical. DK and Cranky are the same character. Donkey Kong isn't necessarily a title, it's literally his name. CRANKY KONG is the title, which DK adopts to close the timeloop as he becomes his own grandfather, allowing his grandson to begin the cycle anew. Jr. is both his son and his father.

Granted, it would probably make more sense and explain Jr's disappearance more if Jr. was also included in that "they're all the same character" theory. DKC DK grows up to become arcade DK, arcade DK has a son in DK Jr., DK grows up to become Cranky Kong and Jr. grows up to be the next DKC DK, and the cycle repeats. This would explain why Jr. only appears in the brief window where arcade DK was a thing.

Yoshi's Island DS is how we can have time travel shenanigans in the first place. Baby DK being introduced in the same game they introduced time travel (Partners in Time aside) perfectly lines up with the theory. As for how, I dunno, Stork delivers Baby DK to his adult self sometime after Bananza, they grow up into arcade DK and Jr. Something like that.
