how did the game have such a turn-around in popular opinion? it went from being assessed as far below fromsoft's standards to being praised as a great game

The people who came first expected basic things like unlimited framerates, voice chat, properly balanced solo bosses, duos, support for aspect ratios outside of 16:9 and other features most modern games have. Then all the fromslop bootlickers started reviewing the game.

Its just fun to play

people played it and realized it was fun. for all the doomposting and anti-shilling people like to do, once the game is actually out and people start talking about how fun it is, there is nothing they can do to stop people from enjoying it. crying for 4 years doesn't actually change the consensus on a game.

the ER formula is good enough to keep the game fun. Nightreign is just more ER with a fortnite tape and overtuned bosses to pad time. some new ideas here and there but its 95% just an ER remix and people wanted more ER. There isn't much to discuss against this game because the BAD is the same BAD from the Series which was already discussed to death. Or do you want me to continue screaming about garbage hitboxes and 900 hits combo poise immune enemies and roll spamming dead-hitting and input eating garbage? That's not about Nightreign, that's just Miyazaki's devs reusing the same garbage gameplay.

Turns out most players sucked at it on day 1 and needed some time to improve before they could really enjoy it.

at its core the game is just plain fun
sure the roguelike systems could be vastly improved but the gameplay is actually good (many roguelikes forget this)

Like any "online" game, it'll live or die based on the quality/frequency of the updates.
Get an updated boss every week, a new boss or nightfarer every month, a new map every 3 months, etc, and it'll do fine for a couple of years.
