Almost all mainstream MMORPGs (FFXIV, Guild Wars 2, OSRS) go way out of their way to avoid "traditional class tropes", to the point that being traditional is way more unique than not.

What is the difficulty in letting me play a mage AND letting me feel like a mage? What is the point of giving a two-handed sword to a mage? Or letting a warrior use a wand? Why do they love doing this

I think it's really hard for devs to do restriction because that means actually building unique things for those classes. Specifically when it comes to a game like FFXIV, CS3 completely gave up on expanding jobs and gameplay features to save costs.

It's ironic the game is on its death bed because they wanted to save costs when it would have been way cheaper to create better RPG systems to allow more dynamic gameplay and character/class growth but eh.
This is a great example of how not to develop your live service. I don't think it's a problem that you're able to equip multiple things as a class. A game like Destiny 2 does class fantasies very well and you're able to mix and match gear pretty much however you want. It's a shame that content still sucks major cock but that's besides the point.

I also disagree with WoW being the only MMO with good class fantasies or good classes in general. They are nice but they have virtually no growth. At least it doesn't feel like trinkets/tier sets or having more stats makes my gameplay more fun or even makes the class feel like that class.
Either way I think it's a matter of incompetence. Devs don't know how to expand their games.

Because FFXIV doesn't do any of the things you listed. The jobs are all very traditional. Mages use staves and cast spells, Paladin uses a sword and shield, Warrior uses a big axe.

Interesting bait putting FFXIV in there, as that one is more like a hero-based MMO than one you're listing. You pick your job, that is your role, no specs, no different weapons. Upside is you only need the 1 character, so you can obtain everything on that character. Unlike others, where your main would never see the drop, but every time you ran it on your alts, that item would constantly drop.

swords have always been for the sissy classes

finished adding the old 1.0 spotlight effect for dragoon. it only occurs when doing the 1, 2, 3 combo or skills with long cooldowns. i'm still trying to figure out how to animate the health bars like the other anon did on his hud.

The 4 bountiful delves you get per week reward you with veteran gear which is comparable to +3

You get one map per week that rewards you with hero track gear aka a +6

And delves also upgrade your vault to hero track, so you can theoretically get two +6 pieces every week just from delving.

Notice that there is absolutely no way to get mythic raid gear. It tops off at +6. And again it's just 2 pieces per week.

Delves are cool to gear up a new alt. Do 4 of them and you're sitting at 1 hero + a bunch of veteran gear, it's enough to start doing m+ at ~+4 maybe +6 if you have good io. And that's it.

It's funny that Guild Wars 2 has a much better leveling experience than WoW, but I still couldn't tolerate it because the actual experience of speccing your character is beyond awful.

Partially because they spread the character specs over 20 different screens. While in WoW you press a button and boom, here are your talent trees all in one single screen, this is your entire character growth in one concise location.

And partially because the class fantasy is ass. It doesn't matter that the open world is fun if I don't get a reward for doing the content, it feels like a chore. Meanwhile running the 20th dungeon might be repetitive, but it gives me 3 level ups that let me further spec my kick-ass class and feel a ton of dopamine rush.

I hope one day we get a MMORPG that has both fun leveling AND fun speccing.

That's just a problem with healers in general. I ended up playing DPS in shadowbringers and endwalker cause they kept neutering healer kits so much. Not to mention resource management was streamlined across the board for every job after they removed the TP bar and put bard and machinist in a weird spot for awhile since that was half of what it did. Everything I liked about most jobs started going away gradually after stormblood. T. butthurt scholar main

FFXIV needed to end at EW and make XIV-2 or whatever mainline number they want it to be.

Any game, even an MMO, needs a refresh once a fucking decade and I don't think this is some wild or crazy god damn concept to throw out there. WoW needed a WoW 2 however many years ago, XIV needed an XIV-2 where DT is instead.

The coding problems, the "we can't really wring anything else out of this setting" problems, the absolute completely different gameplay between ARR/HW and the rest of the game, problems in the early game with player retention because it's quite literally a "It gets *slightly better* gameplay wise 20 hours from the start" type of issue where the only thing they could do to "fix" it was to make it fucking F2P.

A rank hunts have been broken for the greater portion of a decade or an outright decade now, old systems like command squadrons were remade with trusts then remade again for Duty Supports, high player count absolutely eviscerates the entire game by fucking with not only the gameplay but the literal graphical playability since the engine doesn't handle it for shit, it's in the phase of "post game" story wise for a FF where the "Attack" command is all 9999s and there's no real way to change that hence why there will never be another long term antagonist, this shit was on PS3 which ended compatibility with PS4 and now it's reaching the point where the PS4 version will end compatibility for PS5.

Holy fuck, just restart us on another reflection as their version of a WoL and move on or truly start over from scratch with only the overarching basic themes still being retained. Feel like I'm taking fucking crazy pills over here.
