Takahashi and his team got inceedibly shortchanged at every turn when making Xenogears, first they worked under the impression that they were making Final Fantasy VII only to have their game demoted to standalone and a lot of their ideas stolen for FFVII, as such their budget was drastically reduced to that of a standalone game, and they were given a non-negotiable deadline.
After the game released Takahashi was promised a sequel if the game managed to sell a million units, but after it did the suits at Square refused to greenlight the sequel and instead made that abortion Spirits Within.
It's really no wonder he fucking left and took like 3/4ths of the dev team with him, and in the end he won and he's now making games that are actually allowed to be finished before release for Nintendo while Square is making Forspoken.

Everyone bitches about disc 2, but I can't really imagine slogging through all of that exposition as actual game play. The game would have been 140 hours long
