Because no one played Demon Souls before Dark Souls released, and those who did hated it, before eventually going back to it after playing Dark Souls and realizing that it was pretty good. The remake of Demon Souls is so fucking bad, it's honestly sad how many people give it credence when it ruined everything that made the original so grounded.

cause dark souls got patches that kept making the game harder while every other fromsoft game got patches to make them easier
also firelink shrine's branching paths were poetic in design and very well made. all the npcs are also very memeable and memorable.

Bandai Namco's advertising machine is that good. It is why Fromsoft stuck with them after they published Demon Souls in Europe, which they only did because of the Success Atlus got from publishing Demon Souls in the US.
