modding your weapons and gear is pretty simple but very intimidating at first since you have no fucking clue what most of the stats do at the beginning

it is a 12 year old MMO though so there is alot of content, but a good chunk of it is completely optional

I would wait until tennocon 2025 to start playing because they usually hand out free prime warframes and resource boosters. The early content can be slog and you will breeze through it much faster with whatever they are handing this year.

It depends.
By catching up do you mean getting to the current update and unlocking all content? If anything it's just easier now because you have plenty of different sources of Mastery (aka account level) and can skip over grinding a lot of stuff.
Currently you need 17 Mastery Rank to have access to everything, which is just 25% of all the stuff in game in total.
You level up Mastery Rank by leveling up weapons and Warframes to their max level, and there's enough easy to get stuff to get to MR17 without much effort.
So if you don't care about completionism autism and just want to experience all content but not actually grind it for all they're worth, it's really easy to catch up.
The only thing that's harder to unlock is Steel Path, essentially the game's hard mode which you unlock after completing every mission in the game, the issue is that it's retarded and it requires EVERY mission even those newly added, so with each update unlocking Steel Path gets harder and harder which is stupid.
The game really is F2P, if you do not care about 100% then there's zero reason to ever buy anything really and if you care about 100% then buying premium currency is useful for trading with other players to skip some grinds yourself and that's it but it's basically paying other players to do shit you don't want to do for you but this goes both ways and you can earn the currency by trading with other players. The only real monetization bullshit is Crafting time, because weapons craft for 12-24 hours and Warframes 3 days, which you can skip by using premium currency. That's the only bullshit thing, especially at the beginning when you have very little Warframes and Weapons to choose from and need to craft new stuff to progress so it just requires some patience unfortunately.

Just be prepared to use wiki ALL THE TIME, the biggest issue is that this game explains jackshit to you and with how many disconnected systems were introduced, it's very easy to get lost.

There is no "catching up" in this game. The only things you have missed out on and will never get now are 1 founder FOMO warframe (Excalibur Prime) and the heirloom anniversary thing they did.

Everything else you can grind for. If you don't want to grind for it you can buy it outright with their premium currency but you'll still have to grind the resources to build the stuff.

Theres a main storyline, it's just a couple of weeks to get through. There's no real fomo so there's no real time limit.

scarlet spear and the rest of the stuff leading up to the new war being gone kind of blows from a narrative standpoint though. A lot of people going into it now just believe the first scene IS the new war. when it really was all of the events that came before it. It'd be cool if they had a traditional timeline either on their website or in-game with synopsis notes on different quests and events.

Good luck playing the same frame and weapon again and again until you have grind enough shit to sell for plats to unlock more slots. Once in a while, they will give you a free slot to soften the blow.

Idk, find what frame/weapon that you vibe with and build for it. Game has multiple game modes for you to tackle but some content like Duviri is painfully unfinished and was abandoned to die.

You would still have to put some sort of hard cap onto damage to prevent things from dying instantly. It's no different from modern attenuation, just applied to the player instead. They had all the time in the world to show people how they'd handle bosses after limiting player damage. And all we got out of it was garbage like the fagmented one who's coming back for our new and exciting content launching today. It's been a year and a half of that fucker and I still have no idea what the fucker does, outside of not dying fast enough since his health loss is capped to an arbitrary percentage per second. Capping player damage to an arbitrary number per second wouldn't improve him.

Realistically, $10 just for frame/weapon slots only until you get to a point where you can farm things that sell for plat so you never have to spend money. Sort of like Path of Exile where storage space will be your biggest limitation.

You can grind for most things but you'll be severely limited in weapon/frame slots unless you trade stuff with other players for platinum (the premium currency) to get more. Still possible to be entirely free I guess
It's got incredibly smooth moment to moment gameplay but is a giant stack of different modes that were the new hotness for one patch and then never used again, no real connection for anything.
Most of all you have to love grind.

Riven disposition is a per weapon modifier that even accounts for popularity. This is per weapon % balancing that's already in the game and intentionally only applied to RNG win-more mods. It's so braindead simple to balance this game. Truthfully there would be no reason to do that because there're no mechanics underneath to make up for the lack of big number dopamine. Add to that DE leadership are thoroughly opposed to conventional endgame improvements as it takes time away from the next headline marketing gimmick and refactoring is arduous. So you'll never see corpus or grineer squads that require you to approach in certain ways use different tactics until a WF2 or some sort of arbitrarily limited game mode where most of the fluff is removed to focus on gameplay (this will never ever happen).
