bait controversy in a way your game is easily defendable or hated (tweak to what you preferred outcome is). you can either go niche (most people will shit on your game but your community will be extremely tight and loyal) or normie (mass appeal and generally liked but you have to constantly shill or the audience moves onto other fotm games).

setup a discord or something with monthly updates /whatever works for you and set roles to make fans feel involved.

bonus tip: make an easily findable youtube channel with dev commentaries or behind the scenes stuff (show a bit of personality), never market it and let your fans find it on their own. they'll find it special and endearing (as well as feeling like they found something hidden) which will help your audience find you more likeable and personable.

Constant gameplay clips on social media. Make friends with other indie developers and promote each other and talk publicly on social media.
Look for an indie publisher.
Participate in shows, expos, fests and jams.
Accept that your game is going to die in a month because it's very unrealistic to expect your game to sell much more past its release week unless it's a multiplayer game.
Make a good game (optional), but at the very least make an appealing looking game. Read the market.
