This is particularly advantageous if you cook the grenade to explode a few feet or a meter above the ground as the shrapnel will be able to cover a larger area as well as the concussive force of the explosion itself to stun or cause disorientation should your primary target not get hit with said shrapnel. Each piece of the grenade is largely uniform and will cause significant damage and can theoretically pierce light bulletproof vests/flak jackets due to its large mass and high velocity. The problem with these grenades are their overall weight and mass, reducing their throwing range and reducing their potential area of effect. However, anything within it's killing radius (unless properly armored against it) will be simply that: dead.
More modern grenades are lighter and rely more on it's percussive force and ability to stun as well as injure/kill. They're more adept at being used to flush others out of cover so friendlies can dispatch them.
Pineapple: More damage, more penetration, more explosive area of affect
Spherical: More disruptive, higher chances of debilitating the enemy, lighter, can carry more
