It's pointless to complete sets, but some set pieces are decent. The best items are Monster Infrequents since those can be double rare and take components like charms and relics.

game devs put poison in because its trivially easy to code but then chicken out by having bosses be immune to it, because otherwise you could poison them then kite, or have their pathfinding stuck in a doorway and AFK until they die, or even if neither were the case it's just free DPS for the second it takes to inflict it on them so every build would want it to some degree.

the only good ways posion playstyles have been implemented are in incredibly unorthodox ways like Slay the Spire (The Silent) and Rivals of Aether (Ranno) which would not work in a typical RPG

Monster Infrequents are special items that can only be dropped by certain creatures. They can have affixes, just like normal items, but also have automatic stats, like Stonebinder Cuffs with their +skills. You've probably already found some of them like Outrider Bucklers, Sabretooths or Deathweaver Legtipts.
There are also normal versions of monster armor that can have affixes without the special stuff of the infrequents, like Gorgon Cuffs.
In the AE, infrequents have a lighter green than normal rare items but don't display their affixes.
