Why is it so forgotten compared to Super Mario World and SMB1?

It's always been the black sheep of the series. Garish colors, downright ugly characters and enemies, rough and haphazard level design, no way to save the game, a bunch of gay minigames, capturing wands (???) instead of just saving the princess.

SMB1 was just iconic and distinct, somehow it got the sprites and enemy designs and signature level designs all perfect the first time
SMB2J was the direct sequel and much more challenging and refined version of SMB1 but still fantastic
SMW totally changed the formula and set the new standard going forward
SMB3 was just this weird limbo abomination that some people enjoyed but it felt like a chinese knockoff almost

it's not, it's remembered fondly alongside kirby's adventure for having push the NES to its limits.

Kirby's Adventure is gorgeous. SMB3 is an ugly garish abomination
