I always go straight to them, like head directly and enter the fight, to test their power. I let them have their strongest forms and then try to compare.
For Ethel you go directly to her in Act 3 and she will summon her minions as well as you will be forced to deal with her invisibility, revive plants and tight arena which makes her Insect Plague even more effective.

In Act 1 Ethel is vulnerable to Magic Missile but in 3 with the way her clones go indivisible its much harder to do that trick.
