You only need and use this gun in Dead Money. Outside of that you drop it along with all of your other weighted inventory so you can carry more Gold Bars. It doesn't have as much of a use outside of Dead Money

Doing my first energy weapons based run. Got a Plasma Rifle from a grave near Goodsprings, a laser rifle form a Brotherhood patrol in Black Mountain and a GRA laser pistol from Chet. Trying to play the game as a pacifist at the same time, so far it's been a lot of fun.

It's really good, the grenade launcher is decent and once you get Annabelle, and the right explosives perks, you will become king shit of fuck mountain, able to one shot the legendary cazador. Unless you encounter the bug where enemies take no explosive damage you should be fine.

dump stats are luck (almost no benefit from crits) and cha
obviously required perks are Demolitions Expert x 3, anything that allows you to craft more explosives (Mad Bomber and Nuka Chemist so you can make nuka cola quartz for nuka nades), Hit the Deck + Splash Damage, anything that increases carry weight (Strong Back) so you can carry more throwables, crafting stuff and mines (Pack Rat) plus Esther, Annabelle, Mercy, etc (Heavyweight). Adamantium Skeleton is also a decent pick.
Only thing is you need something to help at close quarters sometimes, so I'd pump guns and get And Stay Back and possibly Shotgun Surgeon, though you should also be throwing frags around corners and leading enemies into the hilariously overpowered satchel charges you're going to be making dozens of.
Since you'll be investing in Strength, you might as well pick up the CZ-57, but that's the absolute limit of acceptable guns.

Oh and before I forget, get Heave, Ho! at level 2. Loose Cannon might be a good trait if you want to throw faster, but I don't think it's strictly necessary given the drawback.
