How come it so easy to download roms?

Even multiple GB Iso files. What do all these rom sites gain from hosting them free of charge? They barely have ads and I've never encountered a virus either. Are they really just That dedicated to game preservation and accessibility?

Kind of sucks that people don't know what this kind of mentality is. Imagine this was how everyone behaved on the internet and you have a glimpse of an idea of what dial up 56k internet was like 30 years ago.
It was about everyone being a geek. For the love of information & free technology. Constant break through and experiencing life that would make each other a little bit happier every day because when you are a nerd back then, everyone could use some good times.
