My friend and I got stuck on the final level
It was only years later when I played the game on PC that I found out Knuckles has an upgrade to breath under water
We eventually did manage to clear that section without it, but fucking hell man

SA2 was kind of retarded despite cutting the most meme tier gameplay styles from SA1.
>you know how the best parts of our game were the open Sonic stages like speed highway and red mountain? Instead of following up with that, let's scrap it and make linear hallways instead
>let's make the mech controls worse
>let's make the emerald hunting stages worse by making the radar able to pick up only one specific emerald at a time
>let's make the mech and emerald hunting stages over 2/3 of the game

It's still a good game, but fuck it was criminal that it could run at a constant 60FPS but the Sonic & Shadow levels were SPARSE

Maybe I'm a Sonic autist but SA2s radar was a non-issue for me. SA1 radar should've stayed but I can confidently get all the emeralds within minutes anyways. I'll always prefer SA2 treasure hunting and mechs because it isn't just a closed off area of the speed levels anymore.

Is there a reason to play the Dreamcast version over the Gamecube version?

Better lighting and I think the transparency effects are better. I don't think there's much of a reason to play the GC version if you're not using the multiplayer mode.

Better graphics, Gamecube fucked up the GFX and lightning I believe. There’s also Big the Cat cameos not present in the Gamecube version.

Dreamcast (emulated is fine) if you just want the pure vanilla experience, Steam version if you want to mod it; it’s based on the Gamecube version but there’s mods to restore the original graphics as well as additional QoL changes or just dumb stuff like randomizers or playing as any character (including multiplayer exclusives) in any level.

sonic is an arcade game trapped in a genre of collectathons and is judged as a defecttive collectathon
also there's sonic clones but none copy sonic gameplay so people don't know what to expect, still remember arlo thinking it was a flaw that you jump away from slopes instead of up

Mech controls were changed to balance lock-on. The challenge is not just hitting a high combo, but avoiding damage so you don't break it.

Also the single radar is a symptom of 3D knuckles gameplay breaking down. Most of it started in SA1.
In 2D, Knuckles' glide has slow turning speed and endlag on landing. There's also the fact that gliding in general is more limited in a 2D game.
In SA1 they removed that. They also made emerald locations random, could be for replayability, could be to make the challenge about improvising.
In 2 they're more focused on scoring, but you can't make a good scoring system with such high RNG. They don't want you spawning on 3 good locations and having an instant A. So that's where the single radar comes from. Also why every level is cramped or really vertical, it's all trying to limit your movement so you don't just fly straight to the pieces.
I declare the proper way to fix this is
>more emerald pieces, with fixed locations
>bring back slow turning speed and endlag
>add endlag on failed drill dive
>don't let you re-glide after cancelling
>remove ability to cancel drill dive
>more enemies, make them a bigger part of scoring and make you route around them
