1 has incredible atmosphere, it's that really bleak, lonely, melancholy of being trapped on a hostile alien planet all by yourself all while you're on a limited breathable air supply that WILL run out soon that hasn't been matched by any other game yet. The gameplay is the foundation of pikmin, it's janky and all but it's just good.
Pikmin 2 loses some of the atmosphere, but it's more exchanged by exploring this now somewhat familiar yet still hostile and strange planet which is still pretty stellar. And how unforgiving and brutal this planet is gets emphasized by the wild encounters and dangers. It's still a great game that matches the first and fixes up a lot of the jank while keeping the stellar gameplay intact.
Pikmin 3 I don't actually have much recollection of. It was fine, but it don't think it nailed the bleak atmosphere despite bringing back an expiring resource. The gameplay suffered tremendously by changing out the C-stick swarming for the charge gimmick. It was an okay game, but forgettable compared to the first two.
Pikmin 4 I'd rather pretend never existed. The gameplay has been absolutely destroyed the epic reddit dog and once again leaving out the core mechanic of C-stick swarming (yes it's in, but it was absolutely neutered into uselessness), the atmosphere is utterly tarnished by strapping out any sense of seriousness, urgency, or loneliness of being alone on a hostile planet. It retroactively fucked with the previous games by now making it so that people have already been swarming to that planet since before 1 took place, Olimar was never alone and apparently had an epic reddit dog companion all along.
