Some caves overstay their welcome and the lack of a day limit drops the stakes to zero, but two captains showed off how much better the game is when you can separately manage Pikmin in different places.
The water wraith level is amazing.

There's an autistic war in the fanbase between 2 enjoyers and people who prefer 1 & 3. It mainly comes down to the fact that 2 has better mod support.

My favorite thing people complain about is 2 supposedly not rushing the player, despite the fact you were never really rushed in 1 to begin with.

If anything, 2's caves are where the real interesting shit happens, because unless you're doing a zero deaths run you have to anticipate the RNG layouts and still be just as aggressive. 1 has a better overall flow at high-level but 2's peaks are way higher because of how much can go horribly wrong with a full party.

We do not talk about Pikmin 4.

I have not finished 4 so I can't accurately rate it, but the fact that I have not felt compelled to finish it may say something about the game itself, Oatchi feels like he trivializes the game so far.

What exactly is better about
>enter the cave
>leave your piks at the start point
>scout out the area and assess dangers, suss out bomb traps
>switch to other captain and proceed to clear the area
???
The game suffers from a lack of time limit on multiple levels because you can still just cheese the game by performing basic recon (same as you could in Pik1). There is no real incentive to play in a quick, highly technical way.

2 was fine but I ended up liking 1 a lot more. Better atmosphere and the feeling of isolation, no Louie, no tutorial ship constantly talking to you, no procedurally generated caves, getting ship parts gave you more of a purpose than just "get money lol"
I can see why some people might like 2 more, but the atmosphere in 1 is unparalleled.

4 is great, I would never rank it last but it has some annoyances. They pandered to cavefags like me which is fantastic, but the cave lengths were reduced which defeats the purpose of whats supposed to be a long battle of attrition to the boss floor testing your tactics and resource management.
What P4 gets absolutely right is the aboveground content (other than things not respawning). Olimar's chapter and the dandori trials are pure distilled pikmin gameplay

My main lingering annoyance is, like a lot of people it seems, how Oatchi trivializes a lot of mechanics that were part of 1/2 (skipped 3). Using the c-stick to maneuver your following pikmin to avoid boss attacks like Man at Leg's gun or the rolling lobster in the shower cave, or how when you throw pikmin onto an enemy your DPS naturally ramps up as more are attached, giving a bit of choice between playing it safe and whistling them off early to retreat and reposition or keep throwing more on to try and shorten the fight. The charge attaching your entire 100-man group jumps to max damage instantly and also stuns? Every enemy that isn't flying or a major boss dies instantly. The dog is just too strong, and it shifts the focus from using all your little guys to win against much larger obstacles into wielding a wrecking ball that incidentally has some pikmin hanging onto the side.
Still a very fun game that was worth 100%ing, just different in some personally bothersome ways.

Pikmin 4 would be fine if there wasn't this obnoxious auto-target system that you can't turn off without mods.

Pikmin 5 should add more depth to other game modes like multiplayer and not putting challenge mode into the campaign. Let me play as Olimar again.
And let me have five types and more than 100 Pikmin already. Would be fine if strength was reduced if you have more than 100 Pikmin on field.

I feel like it's just been sanded down to the point where the series has lost most of its unique points and charm
Oachi removes all semblance of speed/group management and doesn't even function properly as a second captain because you always need him around to jump over shit
Shit doesn't respawn on the maps and spawns don't change based on how many days have passed
The atmosphere has gone from abandoned mysterious and hostile earth to literal backyards and living rooms
Not to mention the gameplay changes with the extremely heavy tutorialization, auto-targeting, and the 3 type limit that gimps level, encounter, and puzzle design

There's a lot of stuff that the game does wrong and it all piles up
This guy has a pretty good video on it

2 = 1 > 3
1 has incredible atmosphere, it's that really bleak, lonely, melancholy of being trapped on a hostile alien planet all by yourself all while you're on a limited breathable air supply that WILL run out soon that hasn't been matched by any other game yet. The gameplay is the foundation of pikmin, it's janky and all but it's just good.
Pikmin 2 loses some of the atmosphere, but it's more exchanged by exploring this now somewhat familiar yet still hostile and strange planet which is still pretty stellar. And how unforgiving and brutal this planet is gets emphasized by the wild encounters and dangers. It's still a great game that matches the first and fixes up a lot of the jank while keeping the stellar gameplay intact.
Pikmin 3 I don't actually have much recollection of. It was fine, but it don't think it nailed the bleak atmosphere despite bringing back an expiring resource. The gameplay suffered tremendously by changing out the C-stick swarming for the charge gimmick. It was an okay game, but forgettable compared to the first two.
Pikmin 4 I'd rather pretend never existed. The gameplay has been absolutely destroyed the epic reddit dog and once again leaving out the core mechanic of C-stick swarming (yes it's in, but it was absolutely neutered into uselessness), the atmosphere is utterly tarnished by strapping out any sense of seriousness, urgency, or loneliness of being alone on a hostile planet. It retroactively fucked with the previous games by now making it so that people have already been swarming to that planet since before 1 took place, Olimar was never alone and apparently had an epic reddit dog companion all along.
