It does seem a bit strange how online games in particular are practically just designed to be disposable and to theoretically just disappear off the face of the earth at some point. Beyond the fact that these games cost money both to make and usually to play (money which essentially goes poof if the game disappears), a lot of the larger games are relevant to the history of a genre, and sometimes genuinely relevant to broader culture.
Let's say, hypothetically, World of Warcraft were to go offline one day, and no official legal means of keeping it available in some form existed. Theoretically, one of the most influential pieces of digital media ever could just disappear off the face of the earth overnight. I think that's pretty odd.
Devs supporting a game for all eternity isn't very realistic, but i.e. letting people download the server-side software when they don't want to host servers themselves anymore and allowing them to host in some legal capacity seems fairly reasonable.

I don't think it's so much about hoarding every shitty piece of software ever produced and more about just allowing people the opportunity to keep these games alive in some shape or form if they are interested in doing so.
