It should be bigger (not necessarily full or more content, but the same amount of events and stuff with more space between) and events like the troll carriage shouldn't respawn after the PC kills it once.

I thought limgrave's biggest strength is that it's really dense with content for an open world map.

I disagree because the starting point From used is really good. It shows you all the important landmarks (The Stormveil castle and the Erdtree) right from the start and its road leads to the Tree Sentinel which teaches the player to ignore the main path when they find a challenge that is too hard for them and just look for easier obstacles to level up their character.

The early game is too easy for that point to be driven home. It makes the open world feel pointless instead of satisfying.

Limgrave would be better if you couldn't just walk into Stormhill as a clueless new player at base level and base upgrades. It's another example of Elden Ring being a boss game: progress isn't gated by a literal gate, called GATEfront, that is heavily fortified with mobs and obstacles. Those things are irrelevant, you can just ignore them. There's no reason to follow the southern road into Weeping Peninsula (past the sorcery merchant and the sorcery scroll) where all the flask upgrades and good gear are located, or the east road that leads to an alternative easier route up to Stormhill where you find the physik flask and D and Alexander and Bernahl's ash of war shop.

Conscious design completely wasted because the core systems don't work. New players instantly go north into Stormhill and get blasted by Margit for a few hours because the game world doesn't push back and tell them they suck and need to learn to play, because they genuinely don't need to learn any aspects of the game that aren't boss patterns.

The random Godrick soldiers are easy and you can dodge around the trolls, sentinel, and nights cavalry, but Margit pushes most players shit in hard enough that they're probably going to only come back after 10 hours of clearing the rest of the region.
Agheel is another one of those that you'll probably die a few times on before you decide to instead come back later.

You could git gud against Margit and beat him, but he's an obvious hint that the player should leave and come back later.
You can't beat someone that combines stubbornness with stupidity, but you can lead more wise players into realizing that the open world gives them much more potential to level up and increase in power.

Margit is an example of Elden Ring telling you to go explore because it's an open world game and you're expected to go fuck around and get stronger so you can come back and curbstomp him. It's up to you to decide whether or not that's satisfying and game good design.

Personally, I think you're a retarded player if you just follow the yellow line to your destination. I have many issues with Elden Ring, but Margit being hard if you fight him at level 3 isn't one of them.

None of you can read. I specifically stated that direct access to Stormhill itself should've been a skill check because the entrance is located right next to the junction from where the player can take obvious paths that lead to powerups and such. Souls veterans will brute force any skill check just like they brute forced Margit without exploring Limgrave at all. And the inherent flaw is that there isn't actually any point to exploring Limgrave, a lot of the shit you find there is completely free as in you don't face a gameplay challenge that you must overcome for a reward. Just place that shit outside of Margit's bossfog and skip hours of uneventful goat-riding.

Fighting mobs (which you don't have to do) doesn't teach the player anything valuable that they couldn't have learned from fighting Margit over and over again, in fact the player will learn to play wrong since mobs are weak and susceptible to backstabs and hitstun unlike the mandatory story bosses.

Souls vets will probably be able to intuit that Margit is much harder than even Iudex Gundyr and that they probably can take advantage of the giant world around them to get some levels and upgrade their weapons a few times, as is standard whenever you're walled off and underleveled.
Most Souls vets know that FROM games are usually firm but fair and that if you're clearly being overwhelmed by an early boss, there's probably a better way to progress.
For many builds, exploring Limgrave is a necessity to actually progress decently. If you're a mage who doesn't rescue Sellen, you're pushing rope for a dozen hours until you finally get to Liurnia through Godrick.

>an early boss
Stormhill is meant to be a higher level area than base Limgrave, which extends to Margit being a higher level boss than anything you find in base Limgrave. The game fails to communicate that going into Stormhill is a difficulty bump because the overworld doesn't use bosses to separate areas the way Souls games used to. There was space for intentional game design that was wasted because the open world is designed to be frinctionless and inconsequential. It's not just an open world problem, going through a dungeon rarely signals what sort of difficulty the player can expect from the bossfight. Reaching anything in Elden Ring is such a formality that players can't get a read on their progress.

Stormhill is intuitively more challenging on account of the fuck ass weather in the area and the tons of trolls running around or the Golems on the ground that will revive if you get to close.
But of course, a player could bypass them or even not notice them because you can't see more than 10 feet away anyhow. I missed all the trolls and stuff on my first playthrough until I decided to sweep the area for completionism.
But that is where Margit comes in. Clearly he's much more powerful than most new players are ready for. So the intelligent will leave and go explore the rest of Limgrave to upgrade their gear and level up at least a few times before returning, and while they're at it, run into some useful merchants like Bernahl and the like.

For legacy dungeons, you can pretty much tell how out of your depth you are. If you can't kill trash mobs in a swing or two, you're probably underleveled. As has been the case for the entire series.
For minor dungeons, you usually can get a read based on how they're laid out. If you died 5 times to imps and skeletons and got lost for an hour, you're probably out of your depth anyhow.
