Never thought they were bad. They are different, sure, but not in a way that makes them bad. They're a fun way to spice of the gameplay, and since the game still includes classic style races it's a net positive. "muh straight lines" is such a non-complaint, since Mario Kart was never "just" about turning. It's about items, dodging obstacles, and shortcuts. All of which are still present in the intermissions. They make every lap unique and arriving at courses like Wario's Stadium as the music changes is pure kino.

Did this series gradually become more involved over time or was this entry a shift in gameplay? I was watching some of it and people just seem to be doing shit non-stop, either drifting, hopping, rail grinding, wall riding or rapidly transitioning back and forth between all of the above. I didn't like them for a single reason: Knockout Tour.

KT is so absurdly well made that make all the intermissions tracks failed in comparison. It has the right amount of tension and chaos in the beginning, then it gets more technical in the middle until it turn into a psychological battle in the end.

The intermission courses are barely a saturated version of it and they don't please me at all, especially considering they basically tore off the Grand Prix mode.

It's actually great once you get used to hopping (holding down the trigger without touching the analogue dick) you can do some really crazy stuff, flying and spinning off poles and walls and going crazy fast

i used to be just like you, just try unlocking all the hidden chars and costumes and by then you will be ready for online racing and you'll start to have fun

I feel like nowadays even semi-casual players end up entering the compfag pipeline because there aren't enough spaces to separate the two. Feel like nowadays a lot of average players also end up being monkey-see-monkey-do, in that they see a meta combo become popular, and pick it up themselves, even if they're not actively searching for optimization themselves. Compared to before where there was a very distinct split between people playing to win and playing to have fun, the minority/majority split feels a lot less extreme.
I also think Nintendo shouldn't add an ELO/skill-based ranking system if they don't want to feed into meta mentality. If there's a winner and loser, and a point system showing who's more skilled, some people are naturally going to hyperoptimize as quickly as possible.
