I mean it was fine for the time (reminder that the Genesis is an 80s product) but not especially good.
There's a reason Michael Jackson famously struggled with the Genesis sound chip. Everything is so damn crunchy, it really limits the kinds of sounds you can get from it.

I really liked it. There are certain things it did way better than the SNES's sample based proto-MIDI system. Any electronic music, punchy bass and sweeping organs, futuristic/metallic/industrial type sound effects. What it did not do so well was sounding anything like a real instrument, so any tracks composed for a band, orchestra etc sounded pathetic compared to the SNES. But I really do like how smooth and punchy everything sounded in general. Really pleasing to the ear.
