Play any puzzle games lately /v/?
This game is making me feel retarded.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2662590/UltraNothing/
The puzzles in this game vary from actually pretty good to being kinda of trash I must admit, but the overall presentation, atmosphere, design and set of mechanics the game revolves around has made it one of my favorite puzzles games I've played in awhile if not just one of my favorite games. It's really compelling to play just based on the fact that it all feels so alien and you know a majority of people have never seen the content you're seeing. There is only like one youtube video I've seen that talks about the game and it doesn't even get anywhere near past the beginning portion of it, the amount of content in it is insane and the longer you play the more fucked shit gets and it starts to get pretty difficult in certain places. I just miss that sense of discovery and confusion that old games used to make me feel and the obscurity of this game has kinda reinvoked that, on top of the fact that it's just so fucking bizarre in its own right.
Baba is You is one of the only puzzle games that ever made me give up. It starts easy then gets harder, to the point where you start thinking you're pretty clever for figuring it out. And then it hits the point where you start wondering, am I dumb? Am I not as smart as I thought I was?
>>713671796 (OP)I prefer narrative and deductive puzzle games. I just finished replaying Taiji and Strange Horticulture — I love them both. Baba is definitely much more challenging.
>>713672397>That entire section where it turns the game into a platformer
The worst thing about puzzle games is how tempting it is to just look up to solutions, but if you do that, then why even play a puzzle game?
50 hours of playtime and hard stuck in the garden
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2455920/Mimic_Logic/
Simple yet really fun. Don't be put off by the roguelite tag.
>>713671796 (OP)I was playing "Squishcraft" recently. It looks like a joke shirtpost game but is actually really good, not too far below Baba. The central mechanic is crazy.
>beat Catherine on hard mode
>"I'm so smart lol"
>play Baba is you for a few hours
>feel like a caveman
Damn
Blue Prince starts out as a pretty solid puzzle game, and remains one throughout, but after the beginning RNG starts playing a large role. To a point, it's also a bit of a puzzle how well you can do with the various pieces of the puzzle given to you by the RNG and doing what you can do with them, but eventually it reaches a point where you've solved most things and you're just waiting for a good roll which is a bit annoying.

>>713671796 (OP)Been playing through the Rusty Lake series since it hit 10 years old a month or so ago.
The newest title is a "for fun" title where you help the developers "finish" a game within the game. It's free.
It's nice enough and has plenty of references to the series + teasers for upcoming works.
>Servant of the Lake (next main game)>Rusty Lake Untold: The Lab, a pen & paper room escape (probably going to play this one with friends tomorrow or the next)
>>713675712One big part of the puzzle is breaking said RNG as well.
And depending on how well you comprehend this "part" of the overall puzzle can wildly sway your experience.
>>713671796 (OP)>This game is making me feel retarded.I think it does that for everyone. I know I feel that way whenever I go back to playing it. I'm really stuck in my game.
I enjoy quite a lot of puzzle games. I want to play the 'Lorelei and the Laser Eyes', as well as 'Rats in a Cage'. I'm behind on my puzzle games.
Anyone tried out Rules & Rodents?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2923230/Rules__Rodents/
I remember playing the demo and enjoying it, several months ago, but I am yet to play the full game.
>>713676359Definitely play Lorelei.
>>713676191Guess I never got that far, or never figured that part out.
>>713678197/v/ loves to complain about Blue Prince but the truth is that most of the complainers are just bad at the game. I remember one guy claiming that he could never get the library to appear; I drafted it over a hundred times.
>>713679201Anytime I got the library was already pretty late into the run, and anything it gave me was pure luck if I could make it work with what I already had. But maybe that's just bad luck.
>>713678197The single most important RNG manipulator is unfortunately locked behind a 2-step puzzle which requires notes from 4 or 5 rooms..
twice.
It's very easy to forget about and just never finish, so it can heavily dampen the feeling of progress.
>>713679201man if you had to do hundreds of runs to beat the game you cant shit on the rng complains
I just had to look up the solution in the prison stage on the island
I feel so dumb
Are the extra levels in each region designed to be way harder than the others?
Should I clear each region completely or leave the bonus levels for later?
>>713679998just don't make a habit of it brother, otherwise, there's no reason to play the game. Sometimes certain puzzles require logic that just isn't the sort you're good at, but then other ones are easy
>>713679728At what point do you just call something objectively bad game design. Because that sounds pretty damn close
>>713676587Is there any game that's close to Lorelei, nothing I find ever seems to be as good
>am I the dumbest man alive
>>713680119The extra levels expand on the concepts of the levels they are connected to and are more difficult. If you save them for later, you might want to replay the regular levels that they are related to in order to refresh your memory.
>>713681045It is objectively bad game design to hide something that valuable (and time-consuming even after getting it) behind a puzzle like that.
>>713681045>>713681578Maybe, but to be fair it was a pretty experimental game. Nobody has ever mixed puzzle with roguelite before, it sounds like nonsense from the beginning. They did a pretty good job of it, made a good game, but the obvious contradictions of the genres put a limit on it.
>>713675289Nice simple little game. Ironically, it's actually a true roguelike.
>>713682085>Ironically>actuallyStop. You're worse than a valley girl.
>>713671796 (OP)If you liked the base game and want more challenges I liked these two level packs
https://github.com/Potatosynthesis/Synthetic_Genesis
https://github.com/Karlabos1/Badbad-is-You
Both very much harder than the base game. I like synthetic genesis more, but badbad is you is pretty cool cause it takes the original levels and tweaks them a bit to make them more difficult.
I can't get into obra dinn
the gameplay is great but the pacing is so shit, having to go in and out of a memory every 20 seconds while my ears are being blast out isn't fun
I know you'll all tell me I'm wrong on this but the ending doesn't appear to be special, I'm saying that because I played up to the part where the giant octopus attacks and I just don't see it getting much better except for a ship drama story
>>713682667Obra Dinn tests how good you are at paying attention to minor details.
>>713683394I'm autistic so I got that part down
>>713682085except that it actually isn't... there are upgrades that transfer across runs
>>713671796 (OP)this game is so hard.
Not sure if Tetris is a puzzle game, but I recently started trying to play it more but it feels like it's fucking with my brain.
If I play it for an hour or so it sticks with me for the rest of the day, I start seeing gaps everywhere that I want to fill. Not sure if it's good or bad for my mind, I sometimes even end up dreaming about it if I play too much during the day.
>>713671796 (OP)This loli saw game
I keep getting the lolis (and me) die in horrible ways
>>713684970>loli guro puzzle gameWhat is this game for? Like 12 people in the whole world?
>>713671796 (OP)DLC for Bonfire Peaks finally came out. Good shit.
>>713685039edgy weeb pseuds, lots of people in the world actually
>>713679971wait what? is blue prince a roguelite or something??
>>713685686lost labyrinth
>>713682667>SpoilerNigha, that's like the first hour of them game.
>>713679998prison is when i dropped it because it made me seethe and afterwards i just started looking at the guide, which felt pointless
>>713671796 (OP)Shilling two demos of upcoming puzzle games I enjoyed. They have cute girls.

>>713681109in gameplay? There's lots like chants of senaar, outer wilds, golden idol or void stranger. Narratively though it is the ceiling in the medium and I doubt there are any games that good
Yeah, I'm currently playing Baba is You and trying to clear the Forrest of Fall area and get what you mean.
>>713687861You've barely played the game.
>>713674536This is why they all need layton esque currency for hints
>>713683954I don't think the original Rogue had those either. Come to think about it, I wonder which roguelike game had transferable upgrades first.
>>713681167I want to like this one so badly, but I don't understand how to sequence the puzzles out.
>>713683954>>713688841The distinction between roguelike and roguelite has very little to do with the existence of metaprogression. To put it simply, your game is NOT a roguelike if it doesn't strictly play like a procgen permadeath grid-based turn-based dungeon crawler. That is because roguelikes can be considered a full ass genre on its own separate from all others and it's important that you don't stretch the definition any more broadly than this to avoid confusion except maybe for games like Elona and CDDA.
Meanwhile roguelite can be considered a modifier you attach onto any other genre, like your new indie FPS is now a roguelite FPS with the addition of procgen and permadeath. Meta progression is now ubiquitous in games with roguelite elements only because devs find it neat. It's possible to have a roguelite game without metaprogression but it's still not going to be a roguelike anyway.

>>713689337This type of games require you to build a certain amount of intuition and dare I say muscle memory before you can confidently solve them without bruteforcing. Replay the easier levels, if you solve one by accident replay it again and see how the solution unfolds.
I've been playing classic mobile puzzle games recently (Where's my Water?, Cut the Rope, Monument Valley, etc.) and they hold up well to this day. Jelly no Puzzle is still the best puzzle game.
I've also my own puzzle game projects I should work on (one is on Steam even) but I've been more into board games lately.

>>713692350>I've also my own puzzle game projectsCan you name them? I'd love to play. Also curious if there's a decent demand for puzzle games. Even the big titles frequently mentioned in puzzle threads are very niche.

And here's my Steam game, Ultimaze: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1741480/Ultimaze/
I should improve Ultimaze's sound design but I'm rather happy with the game otherwise.
I also wonder how much demand there is for puzzle games. At least they are rather easy to program which is nice.
I'm getting my shit pushed in by squishcraft
