This is my favorite game of all time so I'll throw my hat in the ring.
>clears throat
My generation hates this game because they're faggots with zero taste. That's it! And every single time I see some jackass complain about the game being "too difficult" all I do is roll my eyes. Because honestly, it's one of the easiest fucking games on the whole console. Sure, it's hard at points - but there's not a single bullshit/unfair moment in the entire game. From beginning to end it's just masterful game design. And it BTFO's Super Mario World completely. (A game I think is way too fucking easy.)

Not all zoomers but a large portion just cannot play NES. It doesn't matter if the game is good. SMB3 used to be held higher than World but there's an age block on the 3rd/4th console generation where there's just this obstinant refusal to engage with the NES. You can see it in how SMW has taken the nearly even ratio from before and now completely overtaken SMB3. It's sad and at some point the same behavior will be shifted one console generation further and SNES will be treated with the same laziness zoomers are treating NES with right now.

As a somewhat early zoomer, disagree
Movement is more precise in World at the cost of the momentum from Mario 3. (comes down to taste, but I prefer the movement of Mario 3 to World)
Mario had way more interesting powerups in 3 compared to World (where most were relegated to Yoshi)
Mario 3's later levels pushed the player more, in a fun way, than those in World.
Powerups mattered WAY more in 3 than World thanks to how they were paced out. Being caped up almost all the time in World kind of hurt some of its challenge.

I see where you're coming from but I thought it was more stiff than precise. But I also think SMB3's controls are the best a platformer has ever controlled in history so there's some bias there. :)
>Mario 3's later levels pushed the player more, in a fun way, than those in World.
No argument here, this is one of the main reasons I'm not a huge fan of World. When the game should be testing your mettle it's just about as difficult as World 4 in Mario 3. And the one moment that I thought WAS hard in World (that castle with the skewers) is more bullshit difficulty rather than fair in my opinion.

Stiff is definitely a better word choice, just couldnt think of it in the moment. Ironically enough, you kind of see this dynamic play out in the 3D Mario games as well with the difference between 64 and Odyssey in terms of how moves like the longjump give you more momentum in a defining older entry, whereas the newer entry seem to lessen the momentum for more precision (World faltering here a bit, resulting in the controls feeling more stiff like you described)
And I definitely feel its one of the best feeling 2D platformers made. How Nintendo did this at the end of the NES is incredible.
>that castle with the skewers is more bullshit difficulty rather than fair
Absolutely. Just one of the things, besides the controls not feeling as good as Mario 3 personally speaking, that kind of kills my motivation to replay it.

Funnily enough it wasn't even the end of the console's life. SMB3 originally came out in 1988 in Japan, two years before the SF!
>Absolutely. Just one of the things, besides the controls not feeling as good as Mario 3 personally speaking, that kind of kills my motivation to replay it.
My main problem was how utterly reliant the game was on the cape. It's a fine powerup in moderation, but that's the key word here: moderation. You get it way too often and with a bit of practice (the cape really isn't hard to maneuver) you can essentially skip entire levels. It's fun in terms of gameplay but from a design perspective it utterly baffles me why it was even included.

That makes it even more impressive to me. Smoothest controlling NES game by far.
>My main problem was how utterly reliant the game was on the cape
It definitely felt like they gave the player too much power with the cape, but my guess is that is was for broader appeal as they knew more hardcore players may opt out of using it if they wanted a challenge. (Doesnt excuse how abundant it feels, but c'est la vie)

Here's the real truth nuke. Most zoomers don't care about your old slop, but the ones who do are pushing these games to their limit. The majority of today's NES speedrunners are under 18, most notably for SMB1.

Why bother? You're calling an objectively well designed game slop. Age does not matter here. If a game is designed well, it WILL stand the test of time. Reserve calling stuff slop for stuff like LJN, or most of the sewage waste getting pumped out nowadays.

Mario 3 isn't very long. Like most old games there isn't much to do once you beat them. If you want to look at who's "playing them the most" you have to look at the speedtrannies.

There's also no reason for zoomers to care about a game released before they were born. I never see people here seethe about millennials never playing Atari 2600 shit.

It bums me out that they don't, honestly. I grew a lot more appreciation for SMB3 and old media as a whole when I started looking at it with a historical lens instead of purely by the standards of today.
>you have to look at the speedtrannies.
I'd rather not. They suck the fun out of old games with little exception.
>I never see people here seethe about millennials never playing Atari 2600 shit.
The 2600 has plenty of fun games though very few I'd call essential. Pitfall is the only one that comes to mind as one I'd call "essential".
