>It turns out the developers actually thought about players attempting to follow NPCs to see where they go, and thus NPC behaviour is surprisingly sophisticated for something the vast majority of players will never notice. Drivers will actually go places, park and even get out of their cars rather than just driving in circles (and, rarely, floor it and drive off the road to take a shortcut). Pedestrians will enter buildings. Buses will actually pick up and drop off passengers.
Already above gta 5 and more likely 6

I know this thread will be taken over by bad faith arguers, but when I was a kid I would just drive around Kirby Air Ride's free roam city trial mode for hours and just make my own stories and lore with a bunch of static buildings and parked vehicles in the basement area. Now imagine kids doing that nowadays in a world as vast as this one. I really don't like the games balance and think they really failed in that department. But imagine being a kid again and having a world like this. I would have loved this shit.

Game has a ton of soul and attention to detail.
It's really great.
Not thrilling about 80 bucks, but otherwise it's stellar.

Wasn't there a quote by some Nintendo big-name before (maybe Shiggy) about the reason there isn't dog-petting bs in their games is because adding flavor like that takes away time from polishing the important fundamentals of the game that actually make it fun? I've also noticed a lot more criticisms of the core gameplay than I've ever seen for a previous mario kart (bad character unlocks, bad menu, empty open world, everything feeling lazily stapled together, etc)

I have no idea if I'm a minority in this current market but these details are important, It's the reason I buy games like Death Stranding despite the story being trash. I love it.

Petting dogs is player actions
NPC feeling alive, actually contributes a lot to open world games. But as Elden Ring proved that's not necessary, and warring kingdoms being no different from hollow zombies being okay too

Was probably Aonuma because iirc that's in reference to Breath of the Wild, which is also a game where the NPCs have relatively extensive schedules and routines so, yeah this and that are two totally different things.
Well I found it, wasn't Aonuma

In what game? Because they sure as hell don't do that in Mario Kart. Half the NPCs just stand still in one spot and I tried following the other racers you can find in free roam and they just drive in a big circle.
