No.
We already had mastered the necessary real-time lighting and reflection levels during the DirectX 9.0c times, almost 20 years ago.

I was running a 1070ti until a couple of weeks ago. I got a 5080, I tried RT, made scenes either more bright or darker, depending on the location. Turned it off to make sure I don't bellow 60fps, even though it was running seemingly fine anyway. In one of the games, I don't even remember which one, said RT introduces more stuttering.

Yes, I would miss raytracing. The Silent Hill 2 remake has it, and it's actually hard to see with raytracing off. The only reason to turn it off would be if someone has performance issues.

I've yet to see a supportive argument FOR ray tracing. Just about every single game I've seen use it look worse than some 10-15 year old games, with more unstable image, far less impressive art design, and outright terrible image clarity, sharpness and contrast.

All this, while having 100 times higher, more expensive system requirements, and/or in consolefags case, demand a mandatory use of upscalers + framegen, alongside with 30fps lock, which is pathetic for a 2020s' title.

Case of point: this game uses no RT nor upscalers, has real-time dynamic shadows and reflections, and runs 60fps on prev-gen consoles. All while having impressive amounts of world interaction and NPCs.

That is indeed the general consensus that has been getting more traction the past few years, no less thanks to the insane bloat and visual cancers of the modern Unreal 5 sloppa.

It's no longer a meme that games looked and ran far better 10-15 years ago. You only realize how good we had, and how far we've fallen, once you go back playing some ye older titles.

If you want to get more detailed nerd info on the modern issues of game graphics and optimization, check out the Threat Interactive's videos on YT.

raytracing took so long to be "viable" at 60fps on consumer hardware that the cheating techniques we used to simulate light just became better than it.
>easier to just tweak diffuse lighting when the player needs to see in darker areas than depend on MUH REALISTICK RAYS
>far more creative freedom when working with point lights/spot lights and other fake lights
>easy to make and place lights in all 3D software, tweaking their settings can get more compliacated but thats part of making good shit
>performance is far better, freeing up modern GPU's for other cool effects or optimization (a slur for modern devs)

>I've yet to see a supportive argument FOR ray tracing.
RT is cool (in theory) because it can not only improve graphics but most importantly because it should be able to enable much more dynamic game worlds since games would no longer need to rely on pre-baked and as such permanently static shit. Of course, modern AAA game devs are creatively bankrupt losers so we have seen absolutely nothing like this in practice, all we get is TAA blur with low res and shit performance without any of the theoretical benefits, for the most part.

There are some games like Satisfactory (which only uses fake software RT from UE, looks awful) where you build the environment as part of the gameplay so it's not possible to pre-bake crap, a good and fully dynamic lighting solution would be killer for that. The software Lumen shite the game does have doesn't really do a good job but this would be a good application. I guess there's RT Minecraft which I never played, that would be a good application as well for the same reasons.
