They look better because texture atists need to put in way more effort. Look at all the details on the skin, meanwhile right one just slaps on pbr shaders with a basic skin color and some blemishes.

Old looks like he's melded with the machine floaty thing and it looks more aliens and exoctic. New looks like he's just sitting on it and it's too recognizable as some kind of 1950s retro future machine or something that messes up the vibe.

Seemed like they took too much influence from Half-life 2 except the tech used by humans in that game were deliberatlly retro inspired because they were working with scavenged and cobbled together machinery. You compare it with the Combine's tech and it meld flesh and machinery together more seamlessly.

Also I just realized the texture of the mouth on the old one is supposed to be a mouth with sharp teeth, instead of it being just the hole surrounded by wrinkly skin. It makes it look a little less alien.

Black Mesa's Nihilanth looks kind of stupid and cartoony. The original looked creepy and wrong, his third arm is clearly grafted on, which means he's not the same as the Vortigaunts but had that done to him to either look more like one or perhaps it helps with controlling them. It's good environmental storytelling, which Black Mesa forgets to do after a while.
