Social trends are them trying to increase their customer base. Now they've seen it loses them customers more than they gain, and the ones they were trying to appease don't even play the games anyway. Just like most things the shift is glacial. They have to lose again and again before they realize how badly they've fucked up. Japs and Koreans putting "fanservice" in games is a just a reminder to what works, what players like. Once the western gaming sphere has been beat down by their own decisions enough they'll follow suit
