I think that has to do with their matchmaking.
I don't think they've ever prioritized fully filling up a lobby. Even MK8 at it's peak tends to randomly have a couple bots or empty spots.
I'm not even trying to be contrarian fag I just don't think anything suspect is going on.

They previously went to great lengths to fake other players, by taking the names of existing players and emulating their race style, then pretending that they weren't bots. Why should they stop the practice now? They know they can get away with it

Playing TF2 as a soldier or demo is similarly painful, the maps are covered in short buildings with 200 meter tall invisible walls above them. You think you'd be able to jump over, but you're wrong.
