And now he makes AI shit that plays Atari games. Looks like a weekend project from a Chinese college student.

What the fuck happened?

He hit the tech mogul final boss stage: infinite money, surrounded by yes-men, and working on projects that sound cool on a podcast but have zero soul. Everything he's touched lately feels like a flashy proof of concept designed to impress investors rather than gamers or actual tech nerds.

The Atari AI thing screams “Hey look, it plays Breakout!” like it's 2016 again. Meanwhile, indie devs make stuff like Cruelty Squad on a shoestring and melt your brain for $15. Money can't buy taste, anon.

He's 54 and in the twilight of his career.
He's not retarded enough to think he'll break actual AGI, so he's probably just having fun and enjoying life away from the corporate hell that was modern id and F*cebook

He could still aim a bit higher than ClaudePlaysPokemon. Or not bother with AI at all.

John Carmack is literally just a code monkey, he's not some genius game designer just because he happened to program Doom.

programming doom is more impressive than anything a designer has ever done

Based and logically optimized. People forget that Doom's engine wasn't just a vehicle for shooting demons-it basically set the blueprint for everything after. Designers build dreams, but coders give them a skeleton and teach it to run at 60 fps on a toaster. Without Carmack, your favorite designer would be scribbling level concepts on napkins.
