Visual clutter. The end result is over reliance on UI assistance ie detective vision, markers, and other crap that helps with navigating the messy graphics. Some games are so bad you are essentially not paying attention to the visuals themselves.

This is a Toys for Bob issue. I dont know what it is but they implicitly lack the ability to design interesting worlds and scenery. Or enemies, characters, humor or even fun gameplay and then we all question why Crash and Spyro died again.

The problem is modern lighting systems and too much object detail. In older games objects were pretty simple with big uniform surfaces, had a designated color scheme and stood out from the environment because there was no aggressive environmental lightsource overriding object colors with a singular tint.

Like even here >>713706319 the only solution is to essentially make the focal points emit light since you have to fight fire with fire and can't rely on texturing anymore. That's why so many games make gameplay important stuff glow neon bright like you're picking up glowsticks or something, the faster the gameplay the more garish it becomes.

This has been a problem with modern gaming but also a problem with digital art. Amateur artists.

Digital makes art easier to access and draw but not everyone can do it tastefully and beautifully. Just because can zoom and add as many details to a scene as you can doesnโ€™t make it good. A lot of clueless artists with no master training fall into that trap.

A new generation slop art has come too. A successor to digital art is AI art. It allows an increasing amount of dummies to make โ€œartโ€.

Visual design, taste, proper composition and various other factors are lost in the new medium of art created by dumb asses.

You know polished turd.

I don't want to go into an autistic diatribe about this topic because I could write like 5 full-length posts about it, but the visual density of modern games (not just remakes) is so overwhelming that our brains have to tune out most of it. Like it's insane how much detail is in these environments and you really can't take it in unless you play the game at .25x speed. It sucks too because most of that extra detail does not serve any purpose, it's just there and will often go unnoticed. Try walking instead of running and you'll see what I mean.

The Big Catch's standalone demo, named "The Big Catch: Tacklebox". Allegedly it's assembled using a bunch of assets from the first area of the full game.
>>713714441
>Also the gameplay look like it was made for speedrunner trannies that don't want to interact with a game and skip 99% of the level
It's actually incredibly difficult to do that. The game's really weighty and resistant to skips, though stuff like picrel still exists and only skips, like, 30% of the level at most.

Mario 64 looked a bit uncoordinated and unpolished, but it had the advantage of communicating clearly to the player ever single surface that mario can interact with. Every triangle is important because it could potentially serve as another surface to jump on, or wall kick off of, or slide down, or give you just enough space to do a side flip or triple jump, and the list goes on.

I bring this up because the scope of Mario 64's graphics made that actually possible. We've added so much visual clutter that you need shit like >>713703830 pointed out in order to direct players to the actually important things onscreen.

This. It's the difference between an artist who actually understands aesthetics and what looks good, and an "artist" who knows how to throw more slop on a screen and can do detail work, but cannot produce the entire artwork at a macro level. No sense of visual design.

The problem is the art schools, fundamentally.

That's because there was strong agreement as to what beauty was, and nobody was confusing the issue by trying to claim beauty was subjective. Every large city had public art that you could walk over to and look at and say okay, THAT is the standard for beauty. Do THAT. Things got even better when public museums became a thing and people could look at good curated selections of paintings and say okay, do like what's in that building over there.

The Academy was right, and the impressionists fucked everything up.

You see all those videogames and CGI movies where characters are Claymation-Pixar-thing in a generic world of Claymation-Pixar-thing. Or in western animation where characters has outlines of 1px in size.
Pixelart, outlines and visuals friendly for colorblind people is a lost art.
