Is the yellow paint a trap? Or am I missing extra items if I follow it? How can I know if the painer means me well?
Are they clues to some puzzle?
What the hell does it all mean?

Zoomers please help me, I never played games with yellow paint before.

Yellow paint is actually part of DEI, the inclusivity for literally mentally retarded people with double digits iq.
You don't need a yellow paint on a ladder to tell gamers that you can climb it. gamers will approach the ladder and mash the action button.
Compare re4 to its remake. And laugh at how games become dumber and dumber.

This. The first time you see a ladder you try to climb it. If you can, you will have memorized it for the whole of the playthrough and when you see another you know you can climb it. If you can't though, you also know never to check another ladder again.

But then what is with the paint? It's gotta be a trap right?

Yellow paint was literally created because of DSP. There's a clip of game devs watching him being a fucking idiot, and it followed soon after.
You are always supposed to follow it. No question. Even if it's a "trap" there is a reward for surviving it. Very unlikely yellow paint will lead to a trap though.

Its the path you're supposed to follow to progress the game, if you just rush to follow the paint you might miss collectables tho depending on the game

Basically its the path to advance the game

You will get it when you start coming home at 6pm with your back broken from manual work, or sitting on a desk all day, your head pumping from the pain and audio pollution of the weekdays and you just want to chill, don't think too much and play games.
tl;dr It's a console game for plebs and tired adults.

The yellow paint is because when they updated graphics to the point where the background and the setpieces/interactables all blended, it was no longer apparent what exactly was supposed to be interacted with. They added more details to the world like maybe a half dozen ladders that are just decoration but in context with a real world design they would go there, so they have to be there, but you can't climb them because the don't go anywhere, so they have to put yellow paint on the one you can climb.

Among other reasons

For normalfags and people who don't really care about video games. We need to stop catering to the normalfag audience. I don't care how profitable it is, it makes for shittier games.

Realism killed videogames, you can no longer distinguish props from interactable objects.
A decade ago you would have stuff like this, sure it looks like a videogame but at least everything is consistent.
