Your game going to be ready for the Steam Summer Sale?
made some nice progress yesterday
>changed it so enemy animations don't reset when you land a normal attack. Not sure about this yet, but it makes the game harder which might be cool
>fixed a "bug" where you could do parries by mashing the block button as if it were Sekiro
>improved the dialog system so there's a pause everytime there's a punctuation sign
also got some friends at my place and they tried the game. The feedback was quite positive: they noticed the hitstop right away and liked it, plus they were able to climb ledges without any effort nor me explaining them the mechanic, which is nice.
>>713708427It'll be ready for the next next fest.
>>713708427Only peasants care about that slop. People will buy my game anyways without summer sales or steam next fests
>>713707435 (OP)It's going well. I got the Boss all textured/cel-shaded and I got the "head" on it, so, now I just need to program it.
>>713709762looks nice, and all that yellow makes me see it more like a machine than a weapon. Love the little dude at the top.

I can't believe it took me literal months to get here. I will need to get good at drawing or else not even the best card mechanics will save this shit.
I did so much today: I made the characters face where they are aiming again, readded the blink shader on hit, handled collisions with bullets, fixed right stick aiming for good, readded strafing mode and finally tested that yes, it's possible to dodge just fine in isometric and I just have to tweak the collider sizes and ensure that enemies will almost never try to shoot the player from different heights because it's impossible to discern depth
>>713707435 (OP)Good, drawing new Logo, Splash Art and more Party Chat Portraits.

While most game developers are content with just posting fanart on their website, I'm going above and beyond by providing my thoughts on each and every one. I'm barely even done with all of the Fygoon ones because of how many there are, let alone the others. Take a look:
https://fygoon.com/art/fanart.html
>>713709378Very nice. Cool to hear you got your friends together to play your game. I can't really do that since my friends already played my game and gave me thoughts on it, so I just kidnap people off the street at gunpoint and sit them in front of my computer to play an incomplete build and provide any feedback with a 50210-TFT playtester form.
>>713708292I find the animations very charming.
>>713710526might sound stupid, but my brain is telling me that those enemy bullets should have a little circle below them acting as a shadow.
>>713711216It doesn't sound stupid, but instead of a shadow, why not a red glow below, since the bullets are red?

What are the first steps in making a video game?
Do you first sit down and write a fleshed out story on paper?
Do you go straight to making the game to see if it's feasible?
Maybe you begin with the art?
>>713712153in my case, I wasn't sure if I were going to be able to make the game I wanted to make, so I started bulding a prototype which has ended up growning into an actual project
>>713707435 (OP)>Told myself I would work on my game during my vacation >Haven't even opened Blender once nor Godot
>>713712153mechanics first. all design flows from there
>>713712153Figure out the necessity to make a game.
>>713712153think what kind of game you want, i.e. what you DO
the rest, including mechanical ideas or addons will follow.
no offense, but why would you think of writing out a story first?
games, generally, are not a primarily narrative medium. I wish people who say video games are their supposed hobby would understand that.
they are called video"games"
come on
>>713712153Realistically, first you should have a REAL general idea of what you want to make. If you're coming in saying "Today will make a video game" with no idea what it will be or look like, that's not going to happen.
You should plan it in the same way one would plan most things. Take your general idea, and break it down to specifics. Like "Racing game" can be broken down to "Party game" or "Serious", and then further broken down from there. Break it down until you have your general idea brought down into digestible chunks. Once you have the digestible chunks written down, you can work on each individual piece.
This is how you should tackle all issues in life, not just making a video game.
>>713710971I get what you mean, I was preparing a whole post but then I realized that right now the game is too safe and retreating makes it way too easy to completely negate damage.
Crusader made it difficult because the tank controls meant you were committed to either try to roll away behind an obstacle or slowly walk back while the hitscan enemies pummeled you, by making the control fluid and removing hitscan I killed a ton of difficulty, I'll have to think of something to negate this advantage
>>713711535>that walk animation oof

How do I get over my own autism about design choices? If I make a Zelda clone, obviously the dungeons need to have puzzles regardless of where they are, but I keep feeling like an idiot for having a regular ass tree have locked doors and switches.
>>713716219maybe try something completely or very different.
there are like 3 OoT-likes and a wind waker clone being worked on right now
>>713716219>but I keep feeling like an idiot for having a regular ass tree have locked doors and switchesmake it make sense then. If the tree can't have doors, then how about the tree uses it's branches to close paths instead. Just keep in mind that videogames don't need to be super realistic, players won't give much think to those details specially when playing a fantastical adventure like Zelda
>>713712153Start by making an arachnophobia mode and go from there.
>>713716219Maybe steal puzzles from other puzzle games and tailor them into your theme? Light beams that have to be aligned with mirrors, water levels raised through pushing rocks into a pond and so on as a start? Just don't make anything melody based.
>>713716219Try reframing what you mean by "locked door" to start. Zelda games always have rooms where you need to kill all the enemies to proceed, right? Why not make it so that the "locked door" in the tree is the start of a wasp hive, and you CAN break it, but attacking the hive pisses off the wasps in the room, so you have to kill them first because they are actively trying to kill you?
The solution to your problem is more autism, not less.

Anyone working on an First-Person game? I'm trying to get rid of camera jitter when strafing. Seems like a conflict between physics updates and regular tick updates. Player uses physics for movement. Could interpolate the camera towards the player, but that seems like a band-aid solution.
>>713722034Hey good for you then, I mean it. Numbers are cool and all but it's having an engaged audience that really makes it feel worthwhile.

Is there a website where I can search for commonly used programming logic like basic pathfinding and such
>>713708427yeah I put my discounts in
>>713722680no
>basic pathfindingA* must be the most common. Godot has it integrated in its navigation agent.
>>713722767pathfinding is just for example.
>>713723150just google or ask some ai, it would be the same
>>713722427Wow, I'm jealous, most of the time I post something I'm working on to my friends or family they just ignore me.
>>713722427Because you didn't market properly. You should have shown up at their house, firmly instructed them to buy and install the game, then with a confident demeanor, stand over their left shoulder while they play for 2 hours, after which they'll be given a pre-written glowing review. Do this 50 times and you'll easily get over the 50 review hump.
>>713722680There's no catalogue but it's all out there, you just need to figure out how to search for it and how to implement a generalised explanation into your use case.
Starting from pathfinding, search pathfinding algorithms (specifics to your engine, there might be something built in), research it.
Knowing how to research is part of programming.

>>713722146If you're going to be nice, then I apologize for the snarky remark. It is true that follower numbers do not mean much if your followers do not engage, but what I have in a small community it makes up for with its engagement.
Personally, I don't like referring to the people who keep tabs on my work as "followers"; I instead call them "Members of Fygoon Platoon".
Hey so i just started recently and i got through a tutorial for c# and unity i also just signed up for a c# class.
Is unity really the best way to go for me? me dream game for now would be to make a game something like sonic 2 or at least a level where physics effect where you go
or should i do my first project on something like rpg maker ?
i did the flappy bird tutorial im sure you all know the one followed it word for word and shit still broke constantly and it made me feel stupid i hope im not the only one who went through this.
>>713723929>rpgmakerNo. Rpgmaker is a hand rails tool for making rpg games, it won't teach you to code, manage a codebase or to do anything other than swap some assets out for making an rpg.
Engine wise for C# you can go with Unity or Godot.
You've got a good goal set up.
>c# classIn person or?
>>713723929You already learned the basics of coding and probably outgrown RPG Maker.
The only thing that matters is whether you understood why things were breaking in that tutorial.
>>713724285A have a course era class and its kinda shit. I'm applying for actually going back to college for computer science next year. I realized im not actually happy doing the work i do and kinda want to follow this as my dream im willing to put in the work. I wish i could go this fall but i missed deadline.
I think rpg maker games are kinda cool to be honest some of them really amazed me.
>mad father >look outside >LIsa (even some of the fan games are good)>Ib >space funeral Also a question do you guys normally make your own assets? working on some shit in aseprite but ill be honest im not an artist and while it felt really good to complete the tutorial with nothing but my own work....but well look at this shit
>>713724442it seemed like the method the tutorial was telling me to do simply wasn't working i had to have chat gpt explain to me in detail why a tag i was referencing did not come up which was causing my game over screen not to appear. I know people hate AI but i could not possibly understand why.
>>713722090Thanks
>blenderIs that any good for making models with a low ploy count and file size? One of my objectives is that the game can be run on almost anything. I don't nessicarily want to go the PS1 graphics route, just want everyone to be able to play it and it be fairly easy to dev for.
>>713722680There's a site like that, it's the site where ChatGPT get some of it's examples besides StackOverFlow. It has a bunch of algorithms implemented in a large amount of programming languages.
https://rosettacode.org/wiki/Rosetta_Code
https://rosettacode.org/wiki/A*_search_algorithm
Love2D has a large amount of user curated libraries, you could directly copy some of them into the your programming of course language
https://github.com/love2d-community/awesome-love2d?tab=readme-ov-file#shaders
>>713725536>blender>Is that any good for making models with a low ploy count and file size?sure, it's good for everything. I use it for my game's models which are sort of low poly. They don't look too good since I'm a new noob but Bleder sure is more than enough for low poly stuff.
>>713725460Could be a bunch of reasons, I'm not familiar with that particular tutorial. The one I learned off of has been nuked from their website as well.
Aside from AI "stealing our jobs" it's useful. I myself use it when I need someone else to help me think how to do something.
But I wouldn't trust it to write code because it can go very wrong. I sometimes let the auto-complete add things and it keeps sneaking in garbage into my code that I find a week later.
>>713707435 (OP)hopped the project once again. but whatever
>>713725012Good luck on computer science next year anon. If you start making stuff today when it comes to college you'll feel a lot more comfortable.
RPG maker games aren't good if you want to learn to make games. It's a good tool if you're an amateur artist and or want to make a story game but you'll learn nothing.
Making a game that plays better than RPG maker games in a different engine would teach you far more.
>own assetsYes after years of using the tools. You're starting out, focus on the game development part and not the art if you want to be a developer.
When I first made my games I was using 8x8 boxes with a white dot for eyes as my characters. Your zombie head is good enough.
Game art is a completely different skill set for developing games. You do need it if you're a solo dev but a solo dev is a one man team, a game developer isn't.
Wishing you the best of luck Anon.

Ahahaha time to steal ideas cause you indie fags forgot 1 important thing; game design. The base for what you even program & art for. What is the purpose of knowing how to art & write IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO ART & WRITE ABOUT YOU CREATIVELY BANKRUPT FAGGOT?
This thread contains some actual half detailed ideas, anymore detailed than this and you'd have to write a GDD. (Do not tell me you do not know what GDD stands for).

There's also this thread today that links to 1 particular game that nobody heard of but it's an insanely good genre and so are the 30k+ genres started from game editor & modding which the industry does not care for. Aaahh Half Life's Zombie Master now that was good game mode. Starcraft's Cat & Mouse maps, now that was great. An entire genre on its own.

not much to share, just a screenshot of a shader/post-process I've been messing around with.
It adds hatch lines to outlines and shadows depending on whether they meet certain thresholds. It's basically a re-write of Unity's screen space ambient occlusion.
Maybe some day I'll post gameplay again. Not today :)
>>713731665If you want consonant just hold to a scale. Using just the white keys on a piano gives you C major (bright, content), D dorian (very neutral), E phrygian (angry), F mixolydian (safe), G lydian (happy and reaching), A minor (people tend to say "sad", but I think "serious" is more accurate) and B locrian (the weird one. If you don't want dissonance, make sure you're not leaning on this one while an F is also happening).
Others relations to be careful with is half-steps (up or down one tone on any western instrument) and whole-steps (up/down two tones on any western instrument) at the same time.
For goodness though, It's too easy for me to explain. I could just throw something out right now. Maybe try figuring out a cool rhythm first and then change the note around.
When you do that; not having a lot of change in notes feels more stable, so if you think it starting to feel too unsure of itself, try pulling it back a bit. Upward movement feels like excitement. Up and then down feels like closure.
>>713731665when writing a melody, pick one note and one note only.
find a rhythm for that one note that sounds good. then once you have a good rhythm that's just one note, start changing the notes.
songs are basically one big chord. yeah, most songs you listen to will use multiple chords, but they are chords in relation to the key that the song is in.
melodies are just parts of a chord, when a melody is played it will give the impression of a chord.
this isn't music, but look at the impressionist paintings. I won't delve further into this, but if you can make sense of what I'm saying with the above words and this picture, you should have no problem writing new music.

When it comed to UX, I try to present information from left to right, display only the useful information, keeping things simple and, when it comes to menu navigation, have at most two levels keeping nesting to a minimum (avoid sudmenu inside submenu inside submenu...). About the visual design, no clue man, our best bet is probably copying from the classics instead of trying to reinvent the wheel.

>>713755440>have at most two levels keeping nesting to a minimumOh that's good to know, I think a major point where I came to senses that my UI was trash was probably soon after making some nested options.
I should probably hide irrelevant stuff when others are in imediate context.
Visuals are hard for this. I can tell a good character design from a bad one but a good menu box background from a bad one seems like an entire different universe.
>>713756413A little bit of nesting is fine but don't go overboard or the player will get lost. About the visuals... maybe try low contrast colors as background with something a little bit more lively for the separators and borders, with the actual information being in high contrast colors. Best thing we can do is basically looking at how other games handle it, but the thing with UX is that you only notice it when it's bad so I can't think of any good examples.
>>7137557570:26 is peak video game design.
>>713757115>the thing with UX is that you only notice it when it's bad Very true. To find good examples I think I need to search into old stuff. Games where they had smaller 'game screen' spaces and had most of the screen filled by the interface, probably.

I'm bored and I wanna try and make a few sprites before I go to bed. I'm gonna list just a few of many, many concepts that have struck me like lightning in the last year, and whichever one jumps at you the most is what I'll make sprites for tomorrow. Pic related, did these in roughly forty-five minutes for a sidescrolling shooter concept I called "Midas". Ready? Here we go.
A) Gravitas
A space shooter where a player controls the Earth itself by spinning fast enough to avoid getting sucked into a black holeโs ever increasing gravitational pull while also changing up the rate of rotation to avoid collision with asteroids or other planets getting sucked in. The player can aim a satellite that circles the planet to shoot at asteroids, alien ships, and other planets to try and break them up.
B) Hexes and Hues
A top-down shmup where you play as an old witch that fights indirectly, casting spells to change enemiesโ colors so that rival color factions kill them in battle.
C) Buck โnโ Bronco
An automatic side-scrolling point and click shooter set in the Old West where you control both a gunfighter and his horse simultaneously. Jump with Buck, Bronco, or both to avoid obstacles and engage in sequences where the two separate and then rejoin.
D) Maโat
A daredevil tightrope walker only succeeds in their walks with an ostrich feather from the Egyptian goddess or order, Maโat. A side-scrolling arcade action game where players will have to adjust the characterโs balance at all times judging a meter and braving various obstacles and enemies. At the end of each stage, the playerโs time and enemies defeated are balanced on a scale. The more evenly balanced the two are, the better the score multiplier bonus. If the scales are heavily unbalanced, the player will have points subtracted from their total score.

>>713767098Ha, that's neat. I think of all the concepts that came to me, Hex and Hue would easily be one that could be a fucking nightmare to design for. There might be potentially dozens of enemies on screen, so the first major challenge is figuring out how to make all of them clearly readable for the player at a glance. Then having to make some convincing computer player AI programming for how they move and attack. And then on top of that, making sure the frame rate doesn't tank.
All I know for sure is that it seems like the game could be a cross between a top down shmup and a real time strategy game based solely on units rather than spaces. If the units worked similar to rock-paper-scissors in terms of what beats what, the idea of shooting at enemies to change their colors adds an extra layer of depth to that. Even more so if enemies start as primaries and later waves coming in as secondaries. And the fact that the witch may have to change her own color to not be harmed by enemies of the same color. I can loosely visualize it, it seems like it could be exciting, or it could be completely unsatisfying chaos that feels like a complete crapshoot.
The idea was that the witch has two types of spells. One which works as a typical shmup bullet the player fires, and another that involves charging her wand (this would be a twin stick shooter), the cursor being the point of origin for a circle to form and grow slowly up to a certain range. When the charge is released, all enemies within that field change color simultaneously. Maybe the color selected to shoot would have to be toggled with two buttons. If WASD's to move, maybe Q and E? There's likely a better way to map those.

After some years since I last gave up on making a game, I came back with a new idea that hopefully will get to see the light of day one day. Got most of the movement working out, now Iยดm trying to build a decent camera system but I canยดt even decide on a resolution. 640x360 seens a little tiny for a larger sprite, since Iยดm testing things with a 64x64 cube, but maybe the camera code is just fucked, gotta work on it. Then itยดs time for combat. Any type of weapons you folks would like to see for a...well, I guess it kinda works like a top down shooter, I guess. The basic stuff will be machinegun and guided missiles, possibly a melee weapon too if I can make it work. Rocket launcher could be cool. Anyways, itยดs good to be back in action and stop avoiding these threads because they reminded me of my failures

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

>>713789504>Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.This statistic doesn't matter if people ahead of time know your game exists. Sure you're competing against 100 other games for organic steam traffic on release day but the point is to gather enough wishlists that 7000+ people get an email that your game has released.
And if you get those 7000 wishlists, steam will put you in the shop window of popular upcoming to grab all that organic traffic for free.

Can I really get sued if I use copyrighted sample in my game music? Since I'm not releasing a mainstream soundtrack, there's no sales impact and so no one would care if I ripped a big section of a pop song.
>>713792274>playing it fast and loose with the music industry of all industriesNot that best idea, imo
>>713792274If it's a free itch game, no problem. If it's a free Steam game, you'll be asked by Steam to remove it or provide a license. If it's not free anywhere, good luck evading Sony Music hitmen.
You're also putting potential streamers/youtubers at risk of getting copyright claimed.
>>713792274Yes you can. You know this, you're just asking someone to tell you that it's not a bad idea because you know how retarded it is to do.
Why the fuck would you voluntarily risk your entire life for an indie game?
Imagine yourself in 3 years time. You're engaged to the love of your life. Before the wedding a letter comes through the door, you're being sued. It's too much for you financially and despite her love for you, she can't marry a man who is going to ruin the life of herself.
You've ruined your life and lost the love of your life because of an indie game you forgot you made.
Don't be stupid.
>>713792274I asked my programmer to implement a system where you can change music & SFX in-game so I can pretend somebody with no modding experience simply replaced the soundtrack of the game with copyrighted one and it isn't my fault because the game is so easy to mod that anyone could have did it.
Then I release the soundtrack in the Steam comments section, GameBanana, NexusMods, etc.
I of course cannot release the game with the soundtrack attached in any of the downladable files you get from Steam or else I'm fucking dead, especially if you live in California.
Where the heck do I find good musicians? Fiverr is impossible to actually filter and they're probably 90% shit anyway.
>>713793474No one is gonna want to download the music for the game separately, you're just adding more obstacles for potential players of your game

Doing finalization on the demo, I'm probably going to have to buy some software for making pre-rendered cutscenes in the future, since it is required I find some good way for making them that won't kill my free time.
Help, I desperately need a music program that allows me to make music that sounds like THIS:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiLEWb-anSs
>>713791754I'm glad. There's so many old space shooters about defending a planet, so I thought fuck it, what if the planet was what the player actually controlled, haha. Also before it was a black hole, the idea was that the sun was expanding constantly, but then that sounded like it would be a pain in the ass for a programmer to figure out how to calculate how sprites were added onto the sun to show it's growth without scaling, and that would probably be a huge drain on performance the longer a game went on. So a black hole made more sense and inspired the name.
As far as incoming asteroids and planets getting sucked into the black hole, only a few of those might be seen every minutes, with the more immediate threat being enemy ships like UFOs that would encircle the player. The benefit to slowing down rotation could be a chance to have an incoming asteroid take out a few of these enemies for you, I guess. That's one of the weaknesses of the game's design so far, I need to come up with more benefits to slowing down besides avoiding impact and getting caught in the gravitational field of other larger planet bodies.
>>713795018Fl studio can do anything if you get the plugins for it. I personally only use free plugins, since there is an insane amount of free shit available. The bass is common, the synths you might need to purchase VSTs for. The background noise can be done with any light pluck. It also is expensive, I got my copy from an anon from /agdg/ dumping his into the thread. It's 600 MBs, and my upload speeds are shit right now, but anywhere where there is a torrent you can find it easily, along with more complete versions. The ones the premium versions of FL studio come with for VSTs are good. It gives a wide range but don't expect anything truly incredible from it without using some editing to make it better.
>>713795872Different anon but i used it back in 2009 and the sound of the electric guitar I pulled i dont know what plugin it was but holy shit it was good.

>>713793602I like music too much to relegate it to someone else. So now I'm going to do that myself too. It's really not that hard in concept, you want to make the instruments sound like a human voice singing basically. Hum a tune and transcribe it to the program.
It could have been easy to sprite the typical blue marble, but I wanted more of a challenge and looked at images of the Earth at night. More recent imagery has shown how the planet glows at night with all the man-made light pollution. Come to think of it, no wonder alien invaders would be attracted to it, all of our largest cities in plain view, big neon targets. Here it is at 600%. Update. This little white satellite would be able to rotate around the planet to shoot bullets at incoming enemies. To add more tension, I imagine there's quite a gap between the planet and the satellite so the player knows that there's a point of no return in which enemies can collide with the planet with the player being unable to do anything about it. Maybe with a certain item the player can add a second satellite. If the satellite itself takes too much damage and is destroyed, that might spawn an item to make a new satellite, with the player having to make sure it doesn't pass them by. If it does for whatever reason, maybe a new satellite item could spawn so the player's never completely defenseless for too long. Of course the red would represent the planet blinking from damage taken. The more damage taken, the faster the red palette would blink.
Now to try and design some enemy ships. Some could be as small as 8x8, others 16x16, and so on.
>>713797583>This is supposed to be Europe and the top of Africa.Dont worry, I could tell.
I don't have my laptop so I can't work on my project.
>>713804198>Maybe with a certain item the player can add a second satelliteHow about ground based anti asteroid cannons, like Stonehenge in AC04
>>713707435 (OP)i wish i was as disciplined and strong as miss tachibana. truly an example
>>713804923Hmm, maybe. That might be an interesting trade off. Instead of two identical satellites, the one always opposite to it no matter how the player rotates them might be better for taking on certain enemies. A little more tension from the player having to scramble and switch their weapons, more or less, all without having to map an entire button to it. A shorter range attack but one that does more damage overall and grinds down enemies and other threats.
So far the major enemies/threats I can think of are...
1) Aliens - randomly float into view and hover toward the planet in a set, oscillating pattern. One might move in a wave, another might go in circles, etc.
2) UFOs - these could always move in a group and have fancy flight patterns. They fly into view, do their pattern, and then fire shots towards the planet as they leave. In order to prevent taking unavoidable damage, the player needs to identify the leader of the group to make the other UFOs disperse back off screen.
3) Asteroids, go figure. Bigger ones break into smaller ones, pretty standard.
