It could work but it's not likely to happen. Make it a mecha roguelite with randomized angels and strict time limits. You can make it so that each run has a semi random story events, character deaths and lore revelations. Think of Into The Breach, Hades and 13 Sentinels. It can work as either a third person shooter or as a top down strategy game.

yeah, but just like the other rebuilds everything is spelled out way too explicitly, even details like Yui’s soul being in Unit 01, which in the original anime was implied but never outright stated, are now explained word for word. it’s an excessive simplification of the original, Gendo’s final speech doesn’t leave any room for interpretation imo
