I always start watching one run I like, then hear a donation with the forced childspeak, and then close the tab. It's so sad.

I'm honestly very hype because speedrunning is in another golden age right now and that usually translates to fun marathons. My only real complain about GDQ in its current state is that they keep trying to make the year-round thing work and it just isn't the same.

It's easier than ever for prominent speedrunners to sexually abuse underage attendees at the conference center hotel!
Just like Smash Bros tourneys!

There's like multiple mainstream youtube channels that just do speedrun content and most new games that come out have a ton of people in a mad dash to get fast times. Plus a lot of older games previously thought to have been solved, or close to optimal, had their records pushed lower within the past few months. You also can't ignore the amount of kids who are joining the scene even if they stick to stuff like Roblox and flash games.

>youtube channels
lol

There were only two golden ages of speedrunning and there will only ever be two: the launch of SpeedRunsLive and the SRL IRC server and the period from 2012 - 2014 where GDQ was getting normal human beings into speedrunning. The entire hobby is rotten with undesirables now and has become a spectator sport rather than something anyone sane would actually want to participate in. And let's not pretend that any of those children speedrunning Minecraft or Roblox go on to engage with real speedruns.

did this shit ever improve? i stopped watching it years ago as the cringe shit and excessive focus on trans people got to be a bit much when it was just supposed to be about speed running.

Yeah, the moment I hear “Hewwo!! I'm donating fo’ my big bwother who wuvs this game!!” it’s straight to Alt+F4. Like bro I’m trying to watch someone glitch through a wall in under 2 frames, not get dragged into a kindergarten puppet show. They gotta start mic gating these donation readings with extreme prejudice.

Absolutely. The real GDQ experience isn’t even the runs anymore, it’s ritualistically gathering in these threads to roast the hosts, complain about couch cringe, and post the same 3 reaction images from 2016. It’s like Thanksgiving with divorced parents-irreparably broken but comforting in its own cursed way.

it used to be good over a decade ago but it slowly got trooned over to the point of saturation and at first it looked like they rolled it back some but i never bothered to see if they rolled back or not, it became completely unwatchable.

think the last one i bothered watching was 2019, i checked in a few times in 2020 and maybe 2021 but didn't stick around for any runs.
