what does safe retro mean? it doesn't seem comparable to safe edgy/horny since those mean ad-friendly edgy/horny whereas ad-friendly "retro" doesn't make much sense. is it just popular series that have been around a long time?

Boomer shooters in general I guess. If the game has all this modern design but with pixelated or sprite-based graphics, then it's still a modern FPS. This stuck out to me recently trying Selaco. On a spectrum, Dusk is much closer to emulating classic FPS without modern baggage like overdone progression systems encouraging completionism or movement mechanics that can mess with traditional spacing tactics like dashing.
