Hardcore fans won't play this because it has nothing to do with the arcade game. And kids won't play it because they don't know who Pauline is.

Who is this for?

>Arcade game
HAHAHAHAHA No one fucking cares about the Arcade game. The DK everyone cares about is DKC and this game oozes everything that came from that era. Kids only care that it looks like Mario Odyssey. Being able to run and jump anywhere they please is what is bringing kids into it, even if they don't know who Pauline is (spoiler, they do know). This will be the best selling DK game ever, bringing it into 10 million copies range, something DK games are not known for.

So they'll think she's a new character. Kids don't play Mario to see characters from 40 years ago.

I find it funny that Sean can't articulate himself at all. By "Content" he means structured gameplay. That everything fits into a small box and you can't deviate. He likes old Mario games because the goal is clear, you run and jump to the end of the level. He doesn't like new Mario because the gameplay is all over the place, it is unorderly. So seeing so many systems in a game makes him uncomfortable. He doesn't like RPG mechanics because he views them as superfluous to the rest of the game, but he also hates it when games try to give the player more freedom in how they approach a challenge. He views it as the devs being lazy and not giving proper level design. Why engage with X when Y lets you bypass, kind of thing. Dude just simply hates video games and I don't even know why he doesn't move on with his life and find a new hobby.

Having played the demo
>I play games for their content, not for gameplay
Is a weird take considering the challenge levels they do have in there.
And
>They do random gameplay elements and everything else is incoherently tied into it.
Makes no sense. Nintendo is still sticking to the game design philosophy that started with Gunpei Yoko and Shigeru Miyamoto.
If they were expecting a structured linear-style 3D DK game in the vein of 3D World or the Galaxy games, Id understand. It would be more in line with the 2D DK platformers being brought into 3D.
But this criticism feels like the poster just doesn't jive with sandbox style 3D collect-a-thons, and is trying to conflate that some half-assed "point" to justify their cynicism.
Like they only want one type of structure for a game and are mad that this one is not that (makes you wonder how they feel about something like Diddy Kong racing)

Sounds like someone who only plays games to waste time. In other words, someone who doesn't actually game as a hobby. Fuck outa here with that shit.

>Content
He means structured gameplay. So a game like Ninja Gaiden NES, where you have your set of abilities and a stage, get through it and fight the boss.
>Gameplay
He means unordered bits to play with no rhyme or reason. He doesn't like open ended stuff that has a ton of ways to tackle it, because he views it as not mattering. Why bother running, jumping and climbing around when you have a glider that can skip all that? This is why he doesn't like BotW, he views it as simply a whole gimmick game where nothing of substance happens. Where they shoved as many different mechanics in as they could to make it seem larger then it actually is. This is what he hates about modern games. Over saturation of gameplay elements that don't correlate to each other at all, that you could remove over half of them and the game would still "function", but wouldn't feel like you were missing anything.

You are correct. Sean likes games that make him seem like an intellectual. He doesn't want games to have stories, because he views games as utterly incapable of doing a narrative and just wasting his time. He wants games to have significant challenge because it makes him feel smart when he completes them. He is the definition of a mid wit.
