Was this guy really so important that he had to be a main boss in the base game and the final boss of the entire series? Even other characters talk about awe inspiring or powerful he is, it makes him feel like main character status.

I feel like From was maybe inspired by the (speculated) scrapped plans for Lothric and Lorian in Dark Souls 3, and saw Radahn as the best candidate for a Lothric equivalent in SOTE But that's just speculation, from some light evidence.

Well the idea is that he's known as the strongest of all warriors but by the time you reach him he's just a hollow shell of his former self. The idea of the big bad of the DLC, who is a schemer type baddy rather than a fighter, using his ultimate self as his puppet and injecting it with his god magic to go further beyond is a logical and fun way to end the DLC. Plus it puts him on the same footing as the base game super boss who was his canon rival.

I think people are more disappointed that Godwin remains in the background.

Fromsoftware bought into their own meme hype of him. Yeah I can buy him being the strongest demigod in the main game (even though mechanics dictate Malenia, Messmer or Morgott deal more damage). I can even buy him being so revered an entire festival is held in his honor. But him being the focal point of the final DLC, the Macguffin that all the characters want to see resurrected and become Miquella's butt buddy? Thats retarded.

Freyja's the only one who gives a shit about Radahn, she's a dumbass and her judgment amounts to "yeah I think Radahn would be okay with this so I'll let it happen". Everyone else is solely concerned with Miquella. Ansbach is there for Mohg and doesn't really care about either of them aside from initially being a victim of Miquella's charm.
