I am playing this for the first time via the HD collection. Had no expectations other than it being potentially janky, but I clicked with the controls surprisingly fast once I realised everything is essentially on a grid.

It is actually quite comfy. My favourite levels so far have been the sphinx and the mine with the waterfalls. I think I am getting near the end now because the story is getting a bit ludicrous with Atlantean mutants that take 500 hits to kill.

Main downsides are the cheap one hit kill traps, obtuse puzzle design and backtracking. Also the fact they updated everything BUT the crappy 90s bowling alley CG cutscenes. Though I am having fun toggling to the old graphics every so often, makes me nostalgic for a bygone era.

Just wanted to share. I will probably play the sequels, are they as fun?

yes if you enjoyed TR1 then you will enjoy TR2 it's a straight up upgrade. TR3 is very divisive because of its difficulty but I liked it.

be sure to play the expansion packs. They were developed by a different team and some people (me) say they're better than the main games, and even harder, but never unfair.

I'm glad another anon has converted to the kino that is TR1

TR2 is great but way more combat heavy than TR1.

I'm in the middle of TR3 myself and I'm finding it frustrating. The level design is overly obtuse and mean in places.

I plan to play Unfinished Business in the bathrobe when I beat the game.

I have heard it is quite punishing, hopefully not due to combat as it is my least favourite aspect of the game. The enemy AI is easily beaten by circling and shooting, unless you are in an enclosed space in which case you are fucked.

TR2 expects you to lose health to progress. I don't recall TR1 ever doing that but it's a silly mechanic and no I'm not talking about how there's way more guys with guns in TR2 I mean progressing a level requires an almost full health bar. It's still my favorite one but I liked shooting bad guys so of course it was.

I hate it when games do that. Like how Xenoblade has fall damage. In a fucking JRPG.

Most people consider the first one the best, but the sequels are worth checking out if you want more

I'm playing the remake and I don't remember the Greece part being so unfun when I played it years ago.

I love TR 1 - 3. People complain about the levels in 3 but to me that's what makes the game great is the crazy levels. It's also cool you can choose which order to do the areas.
Kino games, I replay them every couple of years.

I could never find all the secrets on my own. I really tried but it was sometimes to well hidden.

Right on OP, the remaster was my 1st playthrough for TR 1 as well, and I also love it. It's charming and unforgiving. I got soft locked in the atlantian room with your doppelganger, had to replay the whole level again. Make sure you keep like 3 save states at all times.

the controls are great for involved platforming segments but that's only 1% of the game. they make the other 99% way more tedious.

The level with the doors and switches (St Francis?) is a nightmare.

Then the Colosseum with the French asshole pestering you throughout.
