everyone is actually a painting made by god beings that can make life from paintings and these god beings fight the "writers" who are their enemies and the dude is actually a painting of the dead god being and has a little of his soul and the girl is actually a god being who was sent in to retrieve her parents who are grieving the dead god being son who is also her brother who died saving her because she's retarded, so she goes in but because she's retarded she falls in love with the fantasy world and wants to stay there in her own personal VR space but the not-god-being brother who is actually a painting not the real brother is like "nah nigga this aint it chief" and then the story splits two ways at the end depending on which side you choose.

It all started off as a story about a ruined city and a bunch of people who attempt to take on an eldritch being that kills them every year, with a giant glowing number denoting the age that people will no longer live past. So once a "new year" starts and the 34 turns to 33, all 34 year olds get fucked and die. I liked the simplistic story of chapter 1 better, and most non-pseuds do too.
