It didn't get a mediocre success because it had kind'a strange and ambitious (or maybe not?) story, or because it had a dog, or brought back fan favourite Pikmin and monsters.
It got a mediocre success because Pikmin just isn't that appealing an idea to people. I don't know why, probably the RTS nature of it. It took me yonks and yonks to finally give it a chance, and I can't remember what used to hold me back.
