It's not about having to replay the game, but why do I have to do so much inane bullshit just to get the full game? I'm talking about shit like Isaac where you need to clear mom's heart 10 times to get the chest, need to donate 1000 coins to greed before the lost becomes playable, etc. just give me the game

The way I play games personally I don't have to get all the content. If it's not reasonable to access before I lose interest in it I'm okay with not seeing it or just youtubing the shit. I don't understand the need to pick a games bones clean when there are so man games to play and so little time

It depends. In a game like Isaac, the point of the game is to unlock things. In something like Slay the Spire or Balatro, the point of the game is to win and unlocks are pointless padding. The best argument you could make in those games is to keep the game simpler when you're starting out to add complexity over time, but it's a bad argument.

based

Honestly, even shit as simple as "You get new content and a lot of exclusive items on a second run" is enough for me to consider it a big minus on a game and a potential reason not to play it.

Even worse when it's "Higher difficulties are locked in the first playthrough"

I just don't replay games, man. I like trying out new stuff and I like having fond memories of my favorite games that I only played once.

I love Rogutelites, but it is frustrating that EVERY game has to be one or contain Roguelite elements. Developers think it is a cheat code for engagement. There are so many games that just do not need it and force it in.

the only unlocks in run based games that aren't inherently terrible design are things that apply for a run's entire duration rather than being something you can randomly find during a run. stuff like ships in ftl, characters in issac, and even ascensions in slay the spire are examples of tolerable unlocks. in a game that only uses these types of unlocks, there should be no inherent differences between a players first run, and any other run that player does with the same starting conditions.

I appreciate games like Hades and Rogue Legacy using the "runs" as a narrative device, but boy is it the most antifun thing to hit the first boss and see clearly that there is absolutely 0 intent on the game being beaten first try

how do we coin a term for run based games that are not simulturn tile based dungeon crawlers (roguelikes), but also are not designed with metaprogression as the primary mechanic of the game (roguelites)? because there still isn't a name for them despite most of the most popular run based games being part of this group.

For a genre promoted on being random it sure doesn't take any time at all for me to keep seeing the same weapons and upgrades again and again, in most games you'll end up having the same run after 5 runs at best, the majority of them also suffer from absolute garbage maps without any meaningful variation to justify constantly replaying them

Fucking low IQ Brine shrimp.
Repeat playthroughs is literally a built in mechanic; if not a defining feature of roguelikes.

Elden Ring is a one and done RPG, it's designed to play it once.
