11 (the first MMO) had some fucking INFAMOUS ones but the MMO didnt get as big as WoW at the time so they're a bit more obscure. Ask any XI player about Ma'at, Tenzen, the Snoll fight or Pandemonium Warden and they'll happily use you for therapy.

Why is this a thread

Kefka is the best villain overall. Great design, one of the greatest boss fights and themes ever. In a lot of ways he basically established a lot of the things the villains after him would just ape and copy over and over again, but do worse. Most of his motives and plans were understandable given his situation too. He is a somewhat tragic character that ultimately works well with the clown/jester motif as, in the end of the day, he truly was someone who was experimented on so much he had lost his sanity. Treating people beneath you is fair when you are given a role of power and cannot relate to others. Wanting to rule the world makes sense when suddenly becoming the most powerful being in existence. Wanting to destroy the world also makes sense when realizing that there is no joy or happiness to be found in ruling the world, and that the only people that seem to be able to feel love and happiness are the ones you feel are too beneath you to bother with. It is so much better than the motives of characters like Sephiroth or Ultimecia or ironically my second pick...

Kuja. I think he is extremely memorable because 9 ultimately is supposed to be like a child's fantasy book. He is a petty cocky horrible person that always thought he was above others and in control. Once he finds out his life is finite and ending soon, he lashes out on the world. That is honestly a great motive for this kind of story. But what really seals the deal for me and makes him so memorable is that in the end of the day, he chooses to use the last of his power to save Zidane and the party instead of trying to prevent them from escaping. That is his final act in life. Death was the thing he feared the most, and he chose to save others as he faced death. That single action completely changed the way I looked at him and turned him from being forgettable to one of the best JRPG villains to me.

Am I the only one who is not impressed by Sephiroth as a villain? He's not really that powerful because even a weak rookie was able to sneak behind him and stab him leaving him a cripple. And it really doesn't help that Sephiroth doesn't have much screen time its really Jenova being puppeteer by Sephiroth what's doing all the real work. And even then all Jenova is doing is duping a mentally ill Cloud into giving Sephiroth the Black Materia to destroy the planet. Like how difficult is it to manipulate someone who is already mentally damaged in the brain? So it never feels like a true accomplishment. Compare that to Delita from Final Fantasy Tactics he was manipulating mentally healthy people including his best friend who was of good mind and will. Now that is a manipulator.

Sephiroth to me is grossly overrated and nothing about him impresses me. And I don't even consider Sephiroth to be part of gaming's Top Ten Villains.

Sephiroth reads about the ancients, thinks Jenova was an ancient and not some random ass alien, and since he was injected with her cells, he believed he was the superior race and therefore destined to rule the entire universe.

I've been going back and playing Dissidia on a whim and it cannot be overexplained enough just how much soul this game has. It is SHOCKING it exists. Packed with content, three story modes, cutscenes, voiced dialogue, multiple costumes, cool movesets, banging music, extra modes, customizable equipment... I could go on. How the fuck did they do it? A game of that caliber today would only manifest like 5 or so years AFTER launch. I genuinely do not understand.

You have to understand that Sephiroth being awesome is just a stupid retcon and meme that butthurt Square people have been forcing for years. If you aren't a retarded kid like half the people who played 7 were, you would realize that Cloud was able to finish off Sephiroth in the past (despite all the hype of the character and Cloud not having all his mutation strength from the experimenting) and that it is actually Jenova calling the shots for virtually the entire game. Square has kept trying to twist this by tacking on more and more random nonsense to "expand" upon the stuff that happened prior to FF7, as well as the things that happen afterward. They also keep insisting that Sephiroth is far more relevant to the main plot and Jenova is far less, even though the writing is very one dimensional in 7 and leaves little room of interpretation. So now you've got nonsense like Sephiroth being shilled in Kingdom Hearts as the secret superboss, Sephiroth being the hype of Advent Children, Sephiroth in Crisis Core, Sephiroth in the mobile game, Sephiroth having WAY more focus in the terrible remakes, Sephiroth in Smash Bros, etc... He has been shoved down everyones' throats for so many years that now people have been brainwashed into thinking he is so much more than he actually is.

I recently replayed the original FF7 and I had forgotten that right before Sephiroth kills Aerith, Cloud is the one who is about to do it anyway. And that was the big thing that was being foreshadowed and that the player is supposed to be nervous about, yet no one ever brings it up. Sephiroth doing it instead removes a lot of the edge and shock factor obviously, but it isn't even Sephiroth himself who does it, just a puppet body being controlled either.

This is why I hate the ending of Final Fantasy 7 it really should have been the planet deciding to genocide humanity for its own preservation. Never liked the whole "But humans learn a lesson and become eternally good again" that's fucking nonsense even for fiction.

The only cure to rescue nature is human genocide and I wish that there was at least one story that truly committed to killing off humanity. The closest is probably Nier.

I still can't believe the PSP was even able to run the Dissidia games. The sheer amount of content those games have is absurd, but they also look extremely good too. And they have a ton of audio on them. Lots of voice acting and tons of music. It really must have been pushing the PSP to the absolute limits of what it could handle. And the hilarious thing is the Final Fantasy 7 Remake has managed to hurt Sephiroth's reputation. Sephiroth KNOWINGLY kills Aerith despite understand that killing Aerith means he's doomed. And remember how directly after killing Aerith she still pops back into the physical plane and helps Cloud kick Sephiroth's ass making Sephiroth say he underestimated Aerith? Basically Sephiroth really comes across as a jobber.

Don't matter what the final part of the remake does the damage is done to Sephiroth's image. I know Nomura and those hacks will give Sephiroth a new original ultimate super form but that damage is done. There is no undoing anything showing Sephiroth losing fights in Remake and Rebirth does indeed hurt his intimidation factor. So it doesn't matter if Sephiroth is smiling smugly we know he's a bitch.

The true villain of FF8 is Hyne the god. Hyne literally cursed mankind by making women powerful sorceresses knowing that doing so would lead to warfare and he hopes mankind eventually destroys itself. And the worst part is that this cycle is never broken. None of the heroes figured out that Hyne trapped humans in a loophole of Sorceress Wars until extinction.

Hyne gave humans the tools of their eventually destruction and simply sat back and relaxed to watch the show from afar.

Oprhan, foster parents gave her up in less than 2 years, prodigy child mercenary, gets fired, man she likes tells her to talk to a wall, her backup option is given to her as her sole responsibility and he runs off and gets put to death, which is what compels Ultimecia to travel back and take control of Galbadia and personally intervenes when Seifer runs onto live camera. She laments that she can't go back and do things different and she's got terminal memory loss, struggling with the past slipping away. Despite all of that she has a cult of personality and people are constantly mesmorized by her ie. just like Ultimecia does with all of Galbadia. She has a special ability to duplicate the incredibly strong magic of monsters, ie. she was a sorceress all along but GF use and paramagic training made it less obvious. Your young Quistis becomes obsesed with the identity and motivations of Ultimecia, and she's even the hidden boss, the "King" behind everything at Triple Triad.

Quistis = Ultimecia, Squall's "go talk to a wall" love stoyr is Quistis's tragedy! That's why the FF8 creator's were so adamant about dispelling the Rinoa = Ultimecia theory!!!
