If you want to learn by ear, find a record that you really like and just keep listening to the section over and over again and work it out. Probably good to watch some videos too so you can understand the technique. I'd also work on developing perfect pitch.

Sheet music in itself isn't really that hard to learn. It's a little silly, but you could get it with an hour of concentrated study.

Yeah I played clarinet all through college and have been playing classical guitar for a few years now. You should be able to find sheet music for just about anything even if it isn’t in Eb. Piano is popular for covers. From there it’s easy to transpose, or play as is. Otherwise you’re playing by ear

On an instrument like sax you'll want to know your scales (at least what the different kinds are) since that narrows things down by a lot in terms of what notes you're using, then I got a good ear by transcribing vidya music into a tracker for covers. Basically just try writing the sheet music yourself if there isn't any and it will be good experience for ear training.

Idk what to tell you, you just sound like you don't actually know how to read sheet music. Not knowing all the details to write in or not writing the rhythm properly are a couple of things that are okay, but you should at least be able to get the right pitches for the notes in order. If you can't get that part right I think you need to relearn how to read sheet music. You're on sax, did you check the clefs of the sheet music you're looking at?

i know how to play some guitar
i've been learning fiddle recently

your best friend is youtube. find people that play vidya music and learn from them. if you can't find a sax vidya player, then find an instrument with a similar range and try adapting that.

otherwise, try to figure out what notes are being used, they'll almost always fall on a subset that is a scale, and then fuck around with notes on the scale until it sounds right. a tiny drop of music theory goes a good ways

I'm picking up the piano, progress is slow but steady. I took a month break because new vidya came out (Void War), but surprisingly, I was able to jump back in right where I left off.
Skill level is baby tier, still can only """play""" with my right hand, but I've been working on sight reading Happy Birthday with chords. I don't really have a specific goal right now, but I just want to be able to play some low tempo classical pieces because they make me feel good when I listen to them.

you really need to sleep between learning things. you can practice all day and go to bed sounding like shit no matter how hard you try, and then after sleeping and your brain rewiring itself, the next time you try you notice an improvement

Sometimes they change the key to fit the instrument’s range or comfortable keys. Also of course alto is in Eb, so the notes/key will appear different if you look at music for other instruments. When you play a C on a sax, the actual note is an Eb

if you can transcribe the melody, collecting all the notes of the melody will form a scale (and maybe a few outliers here and there). building chords is a matter of picking a root note and then playing every other note on the scale for 3 or more notes. almost all scales are the major scale, or variations thereof by starting on a different note of the scale (i.e. major = WWHWWWH, minor = WHWWHWW)

Wrong. Playing by ear is RECREATING the song as best as possible, whether through chords or notes. Since the sax is basically only a melodic instrument unless you do wacky shit, you're basically just stuck with notes. PLAYING the song is when you actually KNOW it well enough. Anything else is just learning/recreating. And there's no shame in learning, and none in taking it slow either. Go note by note, second by second if you need to. Practice doesn't make perfect, because perfection doesn't exist, but it makes skill that you can keep building up. Just start simple and then go from there. Why not try the Mario Bros NES stage 1 theme? It's pretty straight forward. Should be easy enough to get a basis.

Singing is pretty much the only music skill I'd suggest HAS to be learned through videos or a tutor to get better at because it involves manipulating your own body. It'd take forever to figure out, and most great singers were taught anyway. Nevermind the paradox of "who taught the first master to sing", but that's just how it has been for a while now. I'll tell you right now that you should get used to the idea of recording yourself so you can get used to it and its inevitable cringeness. I thought I was good at singing until I recorded myself and realized I was fucking up a lot. There's no guilt in realizing you need to work on your skills.

I've looked at a couple tutorials and they have helped, for example finding my vibrato.
Luckily I'm very familiar with recording my voice and completely fine listening it back, and only 95-99% has been cringe so far.

>hear a tone
>play the tone
All you need to do is learn how to make the tone that you hear.
Recording it might help you.

You start with longer notes. Then when you get used to how to reproduce them you can move on to faster things.
It's like learning how to type. You first do it slow and then you get faster.

All a note is a note. It's nothing complicated. A C note is still a C note, regardless of instrument. To be honest, that's why I haven't learned a wind instrument, because the default tuning would fuck me up. God help me if I bothered to learn the clefs for them. Still, a note will always sound the same. If you really struggle with it, open up a website that has a virtual piano, match that note with the piano, IN the right octave. It should sound almost identical. Then once you figured that out, play that note on the piano on your sax. Bit of a long way, but you gotta start somewhere.

I play trombone. I've heard people tell me its one of the easier instruments to learn to play things by ear, but I hadn't really developed that skill. I did find most success playing by ear on the piano. I learned a lot of the megaman BN6 ost by ear on piano. musescore and youtube exists so I would just print out sheet music.

It really boils down to having certain music theory, perseverance, and curiosity. Think of approaching an existing song like a compiled software - you have raw sweat and tears to try out the first couple of notes to see where it lands. Then you use your music theory to see guess where it could be, chord/scale wise. Then you find several notes that work. That's progress. Then you hit a roadblock and try it again and again, where when you hit a wall you go back to 'raw exploring' mode.
