The only 'newish' part about that is the Manga section getting bigger. The bigger large chain bookstores in the US used to have sizeable Graphic Novel sections already where comic anthology stuff was kept back in the 2000's.

I think people have understated the popularity of graphic novels because shit like Watchmen, Tank Girl, and Scott Pilgrim all sold insanely well. However, I went to my son's book fair at an elementary school and a large chunk was dedicated to manga and graphic novels. If it gets kids to read, it's fine.
